Title: Mistaken gender? I passed?
Post by: TinFoilIdiot on January 15, 2011, 02:53:59 PM
I wanted to start a thread of stories of people thinking your the opposite gender so here goes:

1st story: It was after a concert and me and my mate were walking back to the bus nae staggering back to the bus when a guy from said concert came up to me (im pretty sure he was drunk and stoned) goes "You alright mate? *eyes me up and down* WOAH, miss?" It just makes me laugh, he saw my face and thought male then saw my boobs and corrected himself. But yeah, he was high.

2nd Story: My mum friend asked her what her son was called pointing at me, so my mum not thinking said my brothers name, my sister saw all of this and was in fits of giggles. Said friend later appologised.....to my mum, but not to me....not that i minded but you know.....

Im hoping people reply to this thread and dont leave me hanging here  :embarrassed:

I have worked in a hotel, a pub and a ship and have often been called 'sweet' 'love' 'dear' - I don't think they thought I was a woman, but something inside them said that I could have belonged in that category of 'sweet, love' or 'dear'.

As a teaching assistant I am often called 'Miss', but that's kids - they often call the women 'sir'.

The nicest one was someone who read a bit of my novel (narrated by a woman) and wondered how I could internalise a female perspective - to be honest the same way as internalising the male - they are equally tricky so I have practise.

Every now and then some of the people working at the cashier counter, or retail, security, or starbucks aren't paying that much attention and refer to me as 'Miss' or 'Ma'am'. I don't correct them, it's a nice change of pace and I like the acknowledgement that my gender isn't male.  ;D

I don't think I pass for a woman at all - they just are preoccupied with other things and don't take in the details...

I have had that kind of thing too Pica Pica; there is no way I could be mistaked physically for a woman cuz of how I was dressed, but still got called 'love' etc.  It usually happens when earlier in the day I have been dressed more female, I have thought that perhaps some of my female mannerisms carry over even when I am dressed male.  I might try out an experiment actually and see what happens!

About 3 times jumping off some stairs people have commented "that girl has jumped!" with different sorts of amusement.
So far no negative commentary.

Yes, I do often jump off stairs. It requires applied effort for less time than stepping on every step.
