Title: What cologne do you wear casually? What are some good ones?
Post by: Ribbons on January 16, 2011, 07:52:23 PM
I've always worn perfume. It's not due to my liking, I've always hated the stuff, but my parents want me to wear some.

I'm buying some cologne, but I'm a newbie. My parents aren't exactly too keen on cologne either; they know more about perfume.

I want good smelling cologne, not cheap stuff. I also want one that is rather age appropriate, being that I'm still a minor. So nothing too..

I've heard good things about Le Male, A*Men, Very Sexy (Victoria Secrets), and Acqua Di Gio. I wonder if I should just go to Macy's one day and check out the colognes.

I'm a bit on the cheap side, but (out of all the big cologne types except for the Green Polo Cologne) my favourite cologne is a bottle of Old Spice.

It's a bit of a classic, in my opinion, and you don't need to use a lot in order for the smell to last. Plus, it has a good price and pretty much can be found everywhere.

I've never really liked it, but lots of girls seem to love English Leather.

I think they're all bad, so no help from me. Unless you decide to go without.

I'm not even sure it smells English.  I just know that the once or twice a year I wear it, people seem to comment on it.

I'm also a guy who uses the Old Spice body sprays -- though, I only wear it for occasions or when I feel like, not every day. I don't have anyone right now to smell nice for, so I just wear deodorant for most days. I know a few that I like, but for how much I wear it I'm not gonna put down the money for a bottle until I have someone to wear it for; I've also heard that  colognes can be perceived differently by women than they can men, and perfumes are the same. Case in point: Tekla's post -- I remember not being sure how I felt about English Leather, except that it didn't smell at all how I expected it to. I figure my money's just better spent going to pick out a cologne together when I have a lady to smell good for.

I can say though, that most minors typically wear body sprays (I don't know as they count as cologne: perhaps technically, but could depend on one's idea of what cologne is) that can be bought most anywhere. Think things like Axe, BOD, things like that. If they wear anything "expensive" or relatively pricey or "classier" (arguable with some colognes), odds are someone else bought it for them. But, that's just from my experience.

I imagine the next step up from those, that minors would get themselves, would be things like Adidas or Beckham -- something with a connection to sports somehow.

Macy's or Sears is probably best so that you can see what you like and use a trial to see how you think it smells with your body chemistry.

Personally I like and use: Curve, Curve Crush, Curve soul, and Adidas moves 0:01 (wow, never realized how much I like curve until I wrote that)

Yup, I stick to old spice, brut or even english leather. Usually gotten as gifts. I wonder if that is a hint.

I wear English Leather, both cologne and aftershave. It's a very masculine scent with hints of leather in it.

You may want to try something like a cologne sampler set. I have one, Anthony Body Essentials which has a few different kinds of scents to try out. If you get a sampler you may find which ones you like best on ya without committing to getting a big ol' bottle of one that you find out doesn't actually smell very good on ya.

I wear Burberry Brit, I love it, everyone I've asked about it loves it too. It's initially a slightly androgynous scent (ginger and some sweeter notes), but the undertones are cedar and musk and I love it. You should look at a site specialising in scents so you can get some ideas before shopping. Here's Brit's listing: http://www.perfume.com/burberry/brit/men-cologne (http://www.perfume.com/burberry/brit/men-cologne)

John Varvatos has some good ones, with tones like leather, sandlewood, cedar. More of a bite to them, usually, more masculine and slightly older than Burberry's. Bulgari and Calvin Klein have good ones too, Calvin Klein is more clean and mainstream. I rather like CK One and Obsession. Say away from Polo. I think they all smell like chemicals and sneakers.

Do you have preferences in terms of the type? Fresh, pine wood, cedar wood, oriental spices, etc. Particular scents interest you? My suggestions lean more to the cedar/woody oriental variety. Oh, and always remember to try some on yourself for a while before committing to a purchase. The notes change over time, and it will smell different on your skin than on a paper testing strip.

Usually one of the old spice sprays.

I think I have aqua reef at the moment....

No actual fancy-pants "cologne" though
$3 a bottle fits my budget.

I guess me and Andrew have similar interests in smell but my favorites are addidas moves .01, curve (the one in the green bottle) havent tried the others yet, cool water, and my favorite of all just the regular addidas moves, everyone I know always comments that they love when i wear it too ;D

What I like to do is buy lots of the smaller sample bottles on ebay.  Much cheaper and they still last me at least a year, especially when I'm switching them off with other scents so that I smell different every day!  I like the bvlgari scents, especially bvlgari black and bvlgari aqva marine.  Armani scents are always classic and well-liked--if you prefer a clean/ocean type scent especially, armani acqua di gio is quite classic, although a bit common these days.  I've recently discovered that I like the colognes by john varvatos as well.  www.basenotes.net (http://www.basenotes.net) has great reviews of cologne, although be aware that they tend to have quite high-brow tastes in cologne.  I've bought some on their recommendation that smelled absolutely terrible to me, and they've poo-poo'd others that I, and others in my age group (18-22), have found quite nice.

I've heard mediocre things about Old Spice. I want to buy a bottle, but I want other recommendations.

So I am going to totally out my self as a metro scent whore here;-)

Nikolai mentioned my 2 tops - Burberry and John Varvatos, although I wear Burberry London which is a little spicier than the Burberry Brit. John Varvatos Black, which is my current scent, is amazing. Almost everyone I hug or come close to -male or female- says something about my cologne.

My favorite place in the world is the cologne wall at Sephora. The other nice thing about Sephora is they have a scent guide, it is sort of an algorithm to help you pick a scent that matches your taste, i.e. woody, citrus, clean, musky, spicy etc etc etc.

If you go into a Sephora they have a sample pack you can purchase. You pick out 5 scents you think you like, they give you testers of those scents and a little coupon towards the purchase of a bottle of whichever you pick.

And if your not looking to spend a bunch of cash on a new scent - I strongly recommend Axe Intense. They say it has the essence of fine leathers, what ever that is supposed to mean. They make deodorant, body wash and spray in the scent, and it really is yummy - my friend who is more of a scent whore than I am was laughing at me for getting some the other day, then she smelled it and bought some herself!

Ok I will shut up now;-)

I actually wear this sort of gender-neutralish body spray made by Tokyomilk. I used to wear their scent "Gin and Rosewater" but I think they discontinued it so now I wear one by the same company called "Sparrow" that has a sort of subtle smell to it that I can't quite describe- it's really great though! haha It's sort of a woody kind of smell mixed with a cinnamon-spice kind of thing.

Chanel- Egoist  Platinum for me. I'm not wearing any other perfume, that's the only one that seems to suit me.
Plus, the Axe deodorant Dark Temptation seems to match so well with my own scent that people usually don't know I'm wearing either the Egoist perfume or the deodorant, they just can tell that my smell is "amazing and addictive" , then when I tell them it's because of perfume, they understand.

I think if nobody can tell you're wearing perfume, but they can tell your smell is soo nice... that's the right perfume for you. Stick to it.

I don't spray myself with anything. I just use deodorant/antiperspirant. Currently that's Speed Stick, original Irish Spring sent.

I use Dolce and Gabbana pour homme most days. Its very versatile, suitable for day, night, hot and cold weather. It starts citrusy but becomes warm and, crucially, not obnoxious. Only need 2/3 sprays so it ends up being good value.

Burberry London is unique. I love it but can understand why others might hate it. Most suited to autumn/winter nights.

CKin2u (and most other CKs) are good value and very innofensive smelling.

I personally love Old Spice btw, so much so that I also have the shower gel and bodyspray.

Lynx Africa/Axe Kilo is also popular. I use it occasionally. If something has been around for a long time then its a good indicatior of how popular it is, and how many people repeatedly buy it.

Definately look around Basenotes, as previously mentioned and try the testers in department stores. Basenote users can be a bit snobbish, they will always point you towards a £100+ bottle of Creed Green Irish Tweed over the £20/30 bottle of Davidoff Cool Water. Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable using such expensive cologne.

Give 'ACQUA DI GIO' by Giorgio Armani a try. its has a very pleasant clean, crisp masculine scent, yet is sensually alluring too.
(I feel like I'm trying to describe a bottle of wine)

I never ever got one complaint from any of the women in my life with this one. Even my mother was like, dang you smell nice after I gave her a hug last Xmas. Since its more on the expensive side I wish I could give you guys what I have remaining here, because I only use
'Cashmere Mist' by Donna Karen these days.

Hugs and Squeezes

Addidas Dare, but at close to a dollar a ml, it's getting into the rather expensive side of things. But I love it and I don't wear it very often, so it lasts.

Edit; oh ->-bleeped-<- it's a lot cheaper in the US like half the cost... smells like bergamot, lime, vanilla, sea breeze accord, apple, lavendar, rhum, leather, sandalwood.

HAHA this is the first cologne I ever bought. I still love the smell but it only lasts for about 5 minutes so I never use it.

I now always use CK Euphoria which smells pretty epic. Love it.

Adidas Sport Green is my daily after-shave (we tend not to call it cologne in the UK). They don't make it any more, so I got 5 bottles of it on ebay - I should be good for some time  :D

I also have Old Spice in the cabinet, which I wear occasionally. Women seem to prefer the Adidas one though, it's a much more mascauline scent. I find Old Spice smells a bit sweeter than I like. I tend to go for aftershaves that have a touch of a kind of sandalwood/musk smell in them.

I like gourmand type sweet scents (not too sweet though). Some might consider them to be a bit feminine though.

like Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin:

Top Notes:
Green Ivy, Aniseed, Absinthe, Rum

Middle Notes:
Aniseed, Praline, Violet

Base Notes:
Cedarwood, Vanilla, Rock Rose, Barley Water

and I really like Rochas Man:

Top Notes:
Lavender, Green Leaves, Bergamot

Middle Notes:
Sensual and Lush

Base Notes:
Amber, Mocha, Vanilla

Dirty English is good too. It has a woodsy/leathery smell. It's very masculine and is comparable to Gucci Pour Homme.

La Nuit de L'Homme by Yves Saint Laurent and the original is good too.

I can't stand Aqua Di Gio and Coolwater though. I really dislike those type of scents.

Your best bet is to hit up Sephora and try some scents there. Don't go by the initial scent since it will change over time and with your body chemistry. Spray some on your wrist and walk around for 30 min then decide.

Check out www.basenotes.com (http://www.basenotes.com) too.

Oh, good advice there. Aftershave takes some time to settle down. At first it can smell horribly strong.

My ginger cat has a very sensitive nose and when I first put mine on in the morning he screws his eyes up and won't come near me ("Dad, you STINK!" being the message.) I have to let it wear off a bit before he'll forgive me.

God, Sephora's cologne wall sounds like heaven.  :o A personal scent sampler would be amazing, the prepackaged ones never have the right assortment for me. I'm an amateur metro scent whore myself. I'm very picky about colognes, and I love observing how the notes change over time. One thing my oversensitive nose is good for, otherwise it's just a pain - especially in public places.

Shayne, thanks for mentioning that site. I'm going to go obsess over it for a while, now.

In the UK the generic term people tend to use for these sorts of things is aftershave for men and perfume for women. It doesn't matter what the strength is (EdP, EdT, etc)

I use A*Men which can smell almost off-puttingly strong on a sample card. It does not work with everyone's body chemistry, but when it does, it smells amazing. Kind of tobacco-musky-chocolatey.

I need to find a secondary cologne, but I love the smell of this stuff on me so I get lazy and just wear it all the time.

I dont really have a personal favorite yet, still testing em out.

But for body sprays I stick with axe essence.

The most recent cologne ive used was curve wave, and I got many compliments on that.

But back in the day I would use CK BE, my all time favorite.

Its all about personal preference. And how the cologne or spray mixes with your body (oils, sweat, natural smell). You may like the way it smells out of the bottle, but it wont smell the same on you. Or if your friend wears a certain brand, doesnt mean itll smell good with you.

Bod is my everyday cheap cologne, but I sometimes spring for a new type of expensive cologne when I have the money, or I sometimes receive them as gifts!

Yes, yes, yes. I can't count how many times I've gotten a nasty allergy attack or a truly vicious headache, even from people who don't wear very much scent.

There's one that smells like bug spray to me. If I encounter a lingering odor of it in the hallways, probably an hour after the wearer has vacated, I get an instant headache. No kidding--whiff, oh hell, run away, too late, HEADACHE FROM HELL.

My nose don't work well but I can smell me quite quickly. I always thought the idea of smelly stuff was to disguise your own scent which was usually most unwelcome. Bathing daily don't even kill your own smell off. Deodorants haven't done much for it either. Smokers get a evil smell coming out their pores. Most smokers can't smell it but non-smokers can and do quite easily.

I know some people have a problem with scents including my endo. I always feel she will croak from my odor even if I see her only 4 or 5 hours after I shower since she wants no deodorants or scent applied before seeing  her.

I guess scents can go for good or ill as most things do.

I only wear scented deodorant and scented soap. I currently use one called King of Sumatra by the brand Kings & Queens, it smells slightly like lemons, slightly like Earl Grey tea and slightly like mosquito ointment (the stuff called MYGGA if you're Swedish, I don't know if other countries have this). It doesn't smell a lot.

I'm kind of allergic to perfumes and other spray-on stuff, which means that the girl's locker room was a nightmare. All that hairspray, heat protectant spray, spray-on deodorant, perfume... It was Asthma Central for me!

Could very well be. I hate the freaking stuff. I think it smells a lot like Raid, and it has a fierce effect on me. The first time I encountered it, I thought the uni was fumigating for bugs. The trouble with this particular scent is that I can't just walk up to the wearer and ask what it is. I think getting that close might well kill me. >shudder<

I once encountered a female coworker who wore a scent that I thought was quite hideous as well as overabundantly applied. Since I was already standing right next to her, I thought I might as well ask what it was before I ran away. Her response, "Oh, you like it?" That she took my query as a compliment really caught me off-guard. I don't remember what I replied, but she didn't tell me what it was. I don't know what I would have done with that knowledge anyway--go around wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with "If you're wearing Bigtime Fashion Designer's Mortal Agony, please do not come within fifty feet"?

Guys, I hope you use very, VERY small amounts of the stuff you buy.

I use Axe and, personally, I love it. I don't bathe in it though like most kids do. Other guys use way too much of the stuff. One little spray under each arm is all you need. I've always thought that if you can smell it a mile away, then it's too much. The only time you should smell something is when you're super close to the person. But that's just my opinion.

I personally wear Kenneth Cole Reaction, and all the time my female friends will grab ahold of my wrist and say 'You smell delicious' so, I would suggest this highly, I've had nothing but good results and compliments. It's expensive but in my mind, it's well worth it.

I'm always careful to only wear a small amount. I spray a short spurt at a bit of a distance from my left wrist, so it isn't soaked, use that same wrist to scent the other, use the same wrist again to dab my neck. It's very subtle.

Actually, my main motivation for getting cologne was how sensitive I am to the scents other people wear. Or just the smell of people in general (shampoo, hand sanitiser, sweat, hairspray, old clothes, even menstrual pads, I notice them all, daily). When I'm out in public it's sensory overload, if I'm in an enclosed space with someone wearing a bad perfume I feel absolutely nauseous. So I needed something that I could sniff to calm my stomach if need be. Unless someone is standing directly next to me, they won't smell it after the head notes die down.

My guy experience shall be of service:

Go to Macy's and try Chrome by Azzaro, then try Code (or is it Black now?) by Armani (this was called Black Code when I still bought men's cologne).

The Armani stuff is very masculine and will make girls talk about you as you walk by, if that's your aim (I love it, but not on me). Though, at 60 dollars a bottle you better want to use it every day. You just ooze "Man" with that stuff on.

Chrome is a transitional scent, subtle masculinity, and very fresh. Less expensive too. About 40 dollars if I remember correctly.

Here's my perspective. I'm not trying to put a damper on things, just give you an idea of what it's like to be so damned sensitive to odors.

I really prefer that I not be able to smell the person's artificial scent unless I'm so close to him that I'm having sex with him. And if he wears any kind of scent at all (apart from the faintest leftover hint of shampoo, perhaps), he will never, ever get that far.

In recent years, my body has become more tolerant of artificial scents in general, but it really doesn't matter if the product is cheap, expensive, "good-smelling," or "bad-smelling." I've run across pleasant scents that I couldn't detect until I was standing in line right next to someone, and I still wound up with a runny nose and/or watery eyes and/or a sneeze and/or a headache. Fortunately, the effects are less dramatic with certain scents and with lesser amounts.

For those of you who are into women and who hope that your applied scent will attract one: whether they are aware of it, women in general tend to choose mates based on a number of factors; one very important one is natural body scent predicated on genetic compatibility. Axe or Christian Dior or Dire Nasal Assault interferes with this system. I understand that BCPs can tamper with this olfactory ability because they trick your body into thinking it's pregnant (pills apparently didn't mess with me, based on my anecdotal evidence), so YMMV. But covering up your own natural scent messes with the system, too. (If you are pre-T, then all bets are off.)

Men (I suppose straight men) respond to traditionally female odor as well. In keeping with recent research, for example, when I was living as a woman and before I started HRT, my ex was able to tell when I was in the fertile phase of my cycle--I smelled much more alluring to him then.

So when it comes to noses, we can cautiously conclude that women tend to seek out compatibility, and men tend to seek out fertility. I think it's probable that men prefer certain body scents over others (so they might have a preference for women with compatible genetic profiles), but a lot more research remains to be done.

I wonder if anyone has studied how gay and bi/pan people respond to body scents of people of the same sex/hormonal make-up. It seems to me that such research could shed a lot of light on all sorts of cool things.

People in the Bay Area are pretty much scent free anymore, in part the PC thing, in part the 'natural' deal too.  When I smell either cologne or perfume I can pretty much peg them as tourists on just that.

I'm not a huge fan of scents in general.  Most of them just smell like chemicals to me, and I'd almost prefer b.o. over some of them.
The worst is if I'm out dancing as a follow; I come home smelling like 20 different colognes all mixed together.  :-\

I'm not even sure it smells English.

:D

I think cologne is a bit much for regular use. Occasions where you're dressing up I think are appropriate times. Though strong smells generally offend my nose unless it's subtle.

I've been a fan of the original Old Spice since a young child. I use it for aftershave and got a "scent set" for Christmas from my Mom. I do enjoy the Old Spice Swagger scent, especially the spray.

I also have a scent called Viking Men from an incense company. I got it at a Renaissance Faire and the company's called Global Scent Company. Their incense can be burned or worn as cologne/perfume. Viking Men smells really good and a very, very small amount goes a long way for all their scents. They have more scents than I've ever seen.

If I am going out clubbing or taking a girl out I will wear Lacoste Essential. For more casual things like running to the store I will spray on some BOD Fresh Blue Musk, and I always get compliments on this fragrance.

I use Axe too - love how clean it smells but not in a household cleaner solution sort of way.  Axe is just...amazing stuff.

I usually don't wear cologne unless I'm going out somewhere at night (whether on a date or not) and I know it'll make a nice impression on people in my nearby vicinity.  When I do wear it, I've gone with "Fierce" by Abercrombie and Fitch.  However, I've been using the same bottle I bought in 2008 and do not plan to buy another one on the account of their discriminatory hiring practices involving a physically disabled girl.

Hi Guys,
I love perfume but try and keep it for going out.
There is a guy at my work who LOVES Brut. You can smell him a car park away. The girls all use gagging signs as he walks past. There are also a couple of guys who don't use deodorant. Fine if you are working in a manual job, but in an office it is repulsive. The girls' perfume use increases during the day to disguise the pong.

Arch, before I went on HRT I think I could tell when my female co-workers were cycling by their smell (I have to admit it was an uncontrolled expt, I could with my wife as well but again uncontrolled), I found it upsetting and intrusive. I no longer smell 'female' odour. But I can smell a horny man, and that's upsetting as well >:-) >:-).

There are reports of blind people being able to differentiate genders (sex I think more than gender) by smell. People who are blind tend to have higher sensitivity in other senses, but again it is a pretty hard hypothesis to check.

I also spend a lot of my working time using taxis (cabs) the pong is unbelievable  :embarrassed:.
