Title: HRT ball is rolling! Slowly....
Post by: Miss_Anthropic on January 18, 2011, 11:46:31 PM
Well, this evening I finally had my HRT consult appointment. Other than a mild panic attack in the waiting room (being MTF in guy mode in a room full of FTMs and the tallest person in the room is unnerving, plus one of the guys was super hot...didn't help matters) things went well. I got the go ahead and even ended up getting my blood taken to save me an appointment. It was an odd experience, after being asked my prefered name, it was nothing but "she" and "Sara" the whole time... very nice, but very odd to hear. I also kept expecting to get weird looks from the staff, I braced myself and waited for it with everyone I met, but it never happened..... "so this is what an accepting enviroment is like" I though to myself. I eventually was able to relax and it was great to let the walls come down. :)

I thought being able to get my blood taken today would speed up the process, but as it turns out it's still going to take forever; they're booked until the first week in March! So it will be 4 months after getting my letter before I can finally start hormones; the next 7 weeks will be the longest of my life!

Anyway, nothing super interesting but I had to share.

~Sara :)

Sara, even though it is 7 weeks yet, you are on track.  You will soon be running on the correct fuel.

That is awesome news Sara. HRT has changed my life profoundly for the better. I vaguely remember the morose human being I was in the past before the E. True, the emotional swings are no picnic, but it is so much better than the long spells of T fueled depression. Congratulations. Better things are ahead for you.

Woohoo! I am super happy for you girl! :)

I'm glad that you got everything situated, I knew it would work out. I am sure that the next few weeks will fly by! :) :) :)

Hugs,

Just curious, if you have a referral letter and have been to the endo's office, why the long wait? I'm not sure if you're in the US, so things might be a bit different where you are, but I was able to get in to see the doctor within 2 weeks of getting my letter and walked out with a scrip for my meds. Why people want to drag out the process of giving a girl her pills is beyond me.   :-\

I see the head of endocrinology at the state medical college. It takes 6 months to see him.
HRT is not an emergency for them (it maybe for us).
Congrats Sara, remember the first steps seem sooo long....

I am in the US, but things aren't so simple in my situation; there aren't any endos in my area that are willing to work with trans patients, so I have to drive nearly 4 hours each way across the state to a clinic that specializes in trans stuff. Since they're one of the few TG resources in this god-forsaken state they're always crowded and since the weather has been crappy lately they're backed up a few weeks due to rescheduled appointments.

It's a complete pain but it is my only option; should be really fun in March when I have to make that drive every week to have my blood tested. Nothing like going in to work and driving 8 hours, getting off and driving a 7 hour round trip.... I'll be getting in almost 700 miles on those days :-\

Wow, that really stinks! You really have blood tests every week in the beginning? I had mine once a month.

All things considered, 4 months from starting to getting them is not bad in time wise.  However as Melody said and I have also pondered, driving once a week to the clinic to get a blood test, I would question that.  Is there money involved in those tests?  Not to mention the cost.

Main thing is you will be getting hormones.  I would consider trying to find another place closer if possible to get your hormones.  If not consider moving, although that might not be such a good idea given the economic circumstance in the US at the moment.

Take care and all the best for the future

Kind regards
Sarah B

That's what my therapist said they told him, but apparently the person he spoke to is new there, so who knows honestly. Everyone I dealt with was fantastic and merged my two spots to save me a trip, hopefully they'll cut me a break because I have to travel so far.

Congrats Sara

Hopefully you'll be able to get your HRT soon

There isn't much for resources where I live... It took over a year to get my HRT going... Did I celebrate when I finally had my E in my hot lil' hand?

HELLS YEAH!!!
