How do you know you're a man or woman?

This question is one of the most common asked of trans men and women, and it is much more complex than it seems. When I was first asked how I knew I was a woman, to the extent that I would go through the numerous physical and emotional changes necessary to fulfill my needs, I really had no answer to offer. It seems like a simple question that should be answered, if not to the satisfaction of the questioner, then to my own.
I avoid all these self-diagnostic, Cogiati(sp?) tests and the like. They strongly pander to perceived stereotypes , like if you are female you are supposed to love pink and only drive certain types of car.
In my own case half the questions are unanswerable as I don't drive, don't work, never been in a relationship, and I have never been in a social setting while dressed.
I give you an idea of the silliness of these tests etc:
Are you a MAN or a WOMAN?!!
Question 1: What is your idea of a great night at home?
(a) Watching America's next Model while your nails dry, then crying over a romantic film with your boyfriend handing you
tissues?
(b) Having the guys around to drink beer and watch boxing or the big game?
Question 2: You never leave house with out?
(a) Wearing full-make-up, and liberally scented with Chanel No5?
(b) Checking to make sure that you are wearing trousers?
Question 3: How often do you change your underwear?
(a) Two and sometimes three times a day?
(b) Only when your underpants and socks are too crusty to wear?
Question 4: What is your favourite drink?
(a) Wine wine spritzer, and diet Coke?
(b) Your grandpappy's 110 proof moonshine?
Question 5: What is your dream job?
(a) Fashion model, or ballerina?
(b) Heavy-weight Boxing Champion? or Marine Corp 'Gunny'?
