I was out shopping earlier this evening with my Best-friend, we were looking at the make-up. i was so overwhelmed by the choices i had to chose from and i dont anything about make-up(I'm still getting used to shopping for girl stuff).
So i guess my question is; what is a must for any makeup kit. I'm guessing at least
-Concealer
-Lipstick
-Mascara
and thats all i can think of off the top of my head.
In a basic makeup kit, you would want:
1. Lotion or even better, a good primer
2. Foundation
3. Concealer
4. Mascara
5. Eyeliner
6. Eyeshadow
7. Lipstick
If you like things to be a little more elaborate, you can use make up brushes.
All of what Tatiana said, and I highly recommend getting brushes. There is a huge difference in the way that the makeup piles on (dabbing instead of sliding it on with those pads helps). I went out and got a makeover done at Sephora looking like a mess and walked out feeling so much better with some Cover FX foundation/concealer on that actually worked pretty well to cover everything. Too bad the Cover FX was 40 dollars by itself (money is tight), I ended up just buying some lip gloss to appease them.
You should totally go out and get a makeover at MAC or Sephora. The artists that work there are very nice and very professional. Plus, it's free! MAC in particular has alot of experience developing products with transgendered people in mind.

Sounds silly but a really good make up remover soap/gel.
If you can. And I totally realise the courage this takes. Go to a big store with one of the counters that will 'do your look' MAC are great, Shisedo as well and Revlon I have found awesome. But they change from store to store and geographically. Tell the make up person that you need a look, let her do you over and enjoy. OK you want to be in girl mode, tell her you are TG, she has probably guessed :laugh:, but these girls get paid on commission. They are not going to reject you. In fact I tried a few before settling on 'a look' . As a rule of thumb, if you are wearing makeup that can be seen as makeup you are wearing too much. Exceptions being mascara and lippy.
Who ever invented make up should have the Noble prize for womananity.

OK I haven't worn makeup seriously since about 1985 so the irony of my even posting in this thread has to be immense.
When I was a child, because of my already semi transitioned state I was encouraged by my mother to learn about makeup, and she taught me the basics as any mother would to their teenage daughter, but oddly these days I don't like the stuff and I feel kind of oddly exposed when wearing it.
However I have an ultra minimalists makeup kit which I have used on very odd occasions.
1. Liquid Foundation
2. Eyeshadow
3. Lipstick
4. Blusher
That's literally all I have. I don't own any of the other things and after this long I suspect simply wouldn't know what to do with them or indeed how to apply them.

For the most part that's all I have as well. I do have a ton of eye shadows and lip glosses, but most days I just throw on some mascara and chapstick. I am lazy unless I am feeling perky or have somewhere special to go. :-\
mostly I wear a touch of foundation on my top lip and chin to conceal what's left of the shadow of doom and then eyeliner pencil on my bottom lid and mascara. if i feel like it and have a bit of time i may do quite bold liquid top liner with a little flick from the corner of the eye.
but that's it really..
Don't forget nail hardening varnish and varnish remover.
I found that when I started HRT my nails used to split and flake.
A good tip is to use suoerglue (really!) if you get a small crack.

I consider these two essential. Without powder, your face will be too shiny from just the foundation in all likelihood. And the powder also provides another layer of concealment for the nasty whiskers. You pat it on liberally, then use a brush to brush off the excess, leaving just the right amount. The color would be the same color as you foundation. Blush on the cheeks also makes you look more natural, as long as you don't overdo it. A little goes a long way, here.
And I totally agree about the brushes. So far I just have a foundation brush and a powder brush, but I plan to add others as budget allows. It's just way too good how they help. Putting foundation on with a brush instead of sponges (or fingers) is SO much nicer, and I think I use a lot less foundation this way also.
I use a mousse foundation, pencil eyeliner every day, cleanse with make-up wipes then cleansing lotion, then moistouriser. If im making an effort, liquid eyeliner, mascarra and eyeshadow aswell but not too much of anything.
Properly cleansing my skin has had the biggest impact.

Haha... I forgot about the make up remover, cleanser, & toner. lol. You need to get that stuff off once you get it on!

I really like the Mac brushes for applying liquid foundation. Especially the ones that have black bristles with white tips - these ones put the foundation on in a natural way without leaving streaks like normal foundation brushes. Isn't Cover FX also waterproof? If you ladies get liquid foundation, make sure to get the no-colour powder to set the foundation. I also recommend Mac's face & body liquid foundation. As MarinaM said, it's always good to get a makeover done by a make-up artist in one of those stores. They'll teach you how to apply the product and put it on your face at the same time.
All of the girls were saying that there is no substitute for Cover FX. Waterproof? I know you can't just wash it off - I had to work the wipes for three times longer than normal.
Typically, except in the case of Olay (which must have some fairy of youth working near their lotion vats), you get what you pay for. If you're only out to cover up for a little while though, I wouldn't bother planning to spend over $100 dollars on a very basic kit. I like to use Revlon and Cover Girl as basics.
My current setup is:
Concealer (that I didn't use in my avatar ::)),
Cover up
Blush (be careful to use sparingly)
Eye shadow (so much eye shadow! I love it)
Eye liner
Lip gloss
Powder that I never use
Mascara that I almost never use
Foundation brush
Makeup removal wipes
Olay complete face lotion for afterward, because removal wipes can leave a gross film that needs to be washed away.
For toner, get witch hazel - cheap, plentiful and good for the skin.
My basics usually include
Concealer
Foundation
Pressed/Loose Powder
eye primer
eye shadow
eye liner (top more than bottom)
Mascara
bronzer
blush
eyebrow kit
Now I backed off and I'm in the routine of doing more simple eye shadow, concealer, powder, liner and mascara
