Title: Help with my name
Post by: brutallegacy on January 26, 2011, 10:27:25 AM
Hey all.  About a year ago, I chose Aarden as my name.  But now I'm not really sure it fits.  I still like it, but I constantly have to spell it and people pronounce it wrong a lot.  It's just obscure and I've been thinking about other names.  I always thought Jeremy would be my middle name (chose it because of the Pearl Jam song), but I don't like it as a first name for me.  I do like the name Noah, though.  Anyway, any suggestions on a good name for me?

For some reason, Biblical style names come to mind when I look at your pics.  Noah might work.  But I'm thinking you look more like a Jonathan, or a Nathaniel.

Jonathan was the first name that came to mind.

It was Jason for me. But Jonathan works too. J-names definitely fit you.

I agree.  We should think of as many J-names as possible, LOL.

Juan?  (That's a bit of a joke.)

I like Johnathan or Jason.  Especially Jason.

Jack, Jeremy or Jonathan. You definitely don't look like a Jason to me.

James, Jonathon/John, Nathaniel, and Jeremy all look like they'd suit you, especially John.

There are variations on spelling the name 'Aarden' that can be used without giving much trouble. Arden is probably the easiest and all you have to say is, "It's spelt like the word ardent but without the T."

Even some of the more common names have spelling variations that people get asked about! There are a bunch of ways to spell 'Catherine' for example. I have a friend who has the Katharine variation and it still gives her trouble.

As far as name suggestions go, I don't like to say, "you look like a ____" because that's just personal bias. No one actually looks like a 'J' name, they're just influenced by the people they saw growing up that had names that started with J. This is something I learned pretty quickly when I was about to switch the name I was carrying around in my mind for about a decade ago to something different(it was a name I picked out at 12 years old but never really legally changed to it.)

So I could give you suggestions and the odds are you could like the suggestion I have to say and even use it, it's happened before! However, odds are it might not be what you're looking for or even fit what you feel inside.

What I did was I went around looking at a bunch of names of my own heritage(although it doesn't have to be) and I made a list of all the ones that I liked. If I really liked the name but couldn't see myself answering to it, I crossed it off the list. If the name was nice sounding and all but the meaning didn't really match what I wanted then I crossed it off. If there was already a male in my immediate family that had this name then I crossed it off. I would do this and keep my eye out for other names at the same time, looking for something that actually fit me.

You know, you might like one of the names already listed here. However in the end you have to deal with being called that name for the rest of your life and being associated with it. It's less about what other people think you look like and more about what fits you in your own mind.

Thanks everybody.  Jack, Jason, and Nathaniel are common names in my family, so I have to cross those off.  I like Jonathan, but I don't like John.  I do like James, though, so that's a possibility.

@Lachlann, I agree with everything you said.  It just gets old going through the long lists of baby names, so I thought I'd get some outside perspective.

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions :)

Kaleb or Caleb, either spelling works.

Nicholas <-- this spelling always makes me think of royalty. don't know why, but it does.

Jacob. just 'cause.
