Lyon-Martin Health Services, a San Francisco clinic that has been serving women and transgender people for more than 30 years, is facing closure due to serious financial problems.
The clinic's board of directors voted Sunday to close the clinic on Thursday. Dr. Dawn Harbatkin, the clinic's medical director and interim executive director, said the staff needs to prepare a transition plan so she expects to be given more time.
I have to say, this is soooo upsetting! I hope they'll find some funding and quickly! A lot of people are depending on it. I know people who work there, very good people! I also hope they can find employment soon. Very sad.

There is no money, the state is beyond broke, the City is also broke, where should the money come from?
It is a very sad situation we have here in Cali. Money is a huge, huge issue. Answers are even shorter in supply. If I had one I'd be moving to Sacramento.
This is a reflection of things to come, I fear. Just how far the cuts may reach, that's even scarier.

Contrary to early reports, the historic women's and LGBT health care provider will not cease operation this week. Though the clinic still faces potentially catastrophic financial hardship, representatives now call its Board of Directors' weekend vote to cease operations Jan. 27 a misstep.

According to Balon, the clinic needs $500,000 within the next two weeks to escape bankruptcy altogether and continue offering all its current services. Half that amount would side-step Chapter 11 for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, he said, allowing the organization to continue restructured operation.
