Title: Armpit hair.
Post by: xander on February 06, 2011, 12:05:41 PM
Hey guys just wondering if there's a trick to keeping hairy armpits from smelling.
I like having the hair but it's so much more annoying to clean and the hair just seems to pick up smell and it sticks there. EW.
I use anti persperant  deodorant already, I'm an anxious sweater so I want to still be able to smell good. Without losing my pit hair.

I would try switching deodorants. I sweat a lot and it took me a few tries to find one that helped curb that. Sweat itself doesn't have much smell it is bacteria that causes the odor. Your diet can be a factor with B.O. in general. If you are eating a lot of junk/sugar it will effect the way you smell. Plenty of water and eating better can help. If you already are eating pretty well, following proper hygiene and have tried switching deodorants I would consult a doctor.

I use Axe Dry and it seems to work really well and I sweat a lot since I work in a factory.

If anything having hair is better for absorbing sweat. Why do you think we have eyebrows? to keep sweat and dirt from getting into our eyes. With less hair there it's more likely that you will get sweat on your shirt and down the side.

Baking soda helps a lot.

I second that it could just be a matter of finding the right deodorant. I used to have to switch brands stick to stick because it would stop being effective (sometimes before I was even through that stick), then I finally found a brand that I can keep using and never loses its effect -- I've used it for years and I can still use it in place of an actual shower when pressed for time. I sweat quite a bit too and sometimes don't even realize it (because it's not that warm or anything) until I realize the pits of my undershirt are wet.

The only deodorant that works for me is the crystal rock stuff. My armpits smell like nothing, clean, when I'm sweating. It kills the odor causing bacteria, it doesn't stop the sweat though.

I can't stand scented deodorants. They smell wicked nasty to me.

I've had the same problem. My armpits tend to stink a lot more if I don't shave and let the hair grow. I don't really like shaving there but I need to to get rid of the stink

I would suggest trying different deodorants. I use Axe but I don't know if that would work for you

Washing yourself regularly with rice vinegar will slow down your sweat quite a lot. It's like a magical potion for me, specially in the summer. Just pick a towel, damp it on rice vinegar, and rub all your body with it after the shower. It's refreshing, good for your skin, and it will reduce the sweating. I heart apple vinegar is similar, but I've only had nice results with rice vinegar. You can dilute it with water if you feel is too harsh for your skin.

I won't recommend anti perseperant because your skin just needs to breath and sweat. The smell is from the rotten dead bacteria not the sweat itself. So there're more things you can do to prevent your cells to rot (the vinegar is a nice option, lemon is also your friend, as far as you don't have irritation or cuts!) or any desinfectant thing... you know those little towels they give you in the restaurant which are basically a paper towel plus lemon? they work wonders. Just carry always some on your wallet and rub with them your pits when you start sweating (you can do that in the bathroom, if in a public area). The baking soda, silica gel, talc etc is a nice option too, but quite messy and can leave marks on clothing.

IMHO, any deodorant that prevents you from sweat is just not good for you. Your body sweats for a reason, detoxifing in general, and your skin just needs to refresh itself. Putting anti-perspirant deodorant would be like closing the mouth of a panting dog. I know a lot of people use them with no problem, but in my opinion, it's better to get rid of the sweat...once you've sweated.

You have a good point. The body needs to breathe and sweat. I guess non anti-persperant (spell fail, I know lol) deodorants don't stop the sweating. I tried some once and started smelling badly a little while after I got out of the shower. It was a hot day that day so I sweated a lot

I'm going to have to keep the lemon idea in mind. It would smell nice as well as feel nice as long as there's no cuts, like you said

I just use guy soap and guy deo and it seems to work. I noticed my pits actually dry faster since I grew it out so they stink less.
