I was having trouble as I have to wear reading glasses, and was finding it virtually impossible to get eye-liner on right.
A tip I was put onto was to use a liquid and put it on in a much wider line than you want, then use a cotton bud in eye make-up remover to take get the right width. If you do it straight away, while still wet, you can get a nice clean edge, without any smudges left behind. This I can do with glasses on.

Fortunately I'm very near-sighted and I do alright with makeup as long as I haven't put my contacts in yet.
I've recently discover powder eyeliner and I like.
The same as the liquid eyeliner mentioned above, you can clean up the line with a Q-tip afterwards.
