Title: Is Aggression linked to testosterone?
Post by: iris1469 on February 18, 2011, 01:18:53 PM
most people would say yes. I thought so before HRT.....BUT i dont think that is the case anymore....my testosterone level was at a 7 on my last blood test, and i can be just as aggressive now as before...though   it may be easier to control now it is still there....interesting

Without knowing much biology, I think it is a predisposition but nothing more. Aggression probably depends much more a someone's personality, past experiences, and the situation in question.

I would say yes, before testosterone I wasn't aggressive at all, now I am much more aggressive then I was before.

The truth is, the answer is no.

Testosterone does not cause aggression.

There's even scientific research into the matter! (http://psp.sagepub.com/content/20/1/34.abstract)

See, this is actually one of these myths created to support the division of men and women into submissive and dominant gender roles. It's one of the myths perpetuated to keep women from pursuing highly competitive jobs and to treat women's sports as softer, weaker, less competitive, etcetera.

It's social indoctrination really.
Boys are encouraged to be tough, competitive, rambunctious, etcetera, while girls are restricted, told to be quiet, settle down, play nice, etcetera.
This can mean that when trans-men are allowed to be men that they allow themselves to experience more of the aggression they've held back in the past, because they're now allowed to be aggressive!

What can actually make you more aggressive however is hormonal imbalance and/or hormonal changes that you aren't fully used to yet. That's why steroids can cause aggression, cause they can cause massive hormonal imbalance when some of the testosterone is converted into estrogen.

Hey Miniar can I ask something off topic real quick? How do you do the link embedded with different words over it? I spent hours trying to figure it out one day...

Superkitty I think the thing I've noticed is since starting T I feel more of a need to act on my aggression where-as before I could ignore it more.

In animal studies, territoriality corresponds with higher testosterone levels.  Successful aggression increases testosterone levels.

If you look at it statistically, it certainly is.

But I agree that there are lots of other factors involved.  :)
