Title: Finding TG resources in a new place?
Post by: mikke on January 15, 2007, 06:23:44 PM
My aunt has made a really generous offer of allowing me to move to South Bend, Indiana to go to school full-time and not have to pay rent or anything. But currently I live in seattle, where I know I'm getting really terrific care and have a really good chance of a successful transition (ftm). South bend is conservative and catholic and I can't really find much online to do with TG resources.
Does anyone live around there in IN or MI who might have some suggestions for me on yay or nay for this idea of moving? IT's a tempting prospect but I don't think I can do it if there's a limited chance of finding a proper therapist, doctor to prescribe T, etc.

Lane,

Get through school.  Get a degree. Get a good job. Make lots of money.

Hon, life is a whole lot easier if you have money.  And that includes transition.  Think hard about your priorities.  If you can get school covered, go for it.  Get through it as fast as you can.

I wish it were as simple as just putting all the TG stuff aside while I go to school and THEN dealing with it...but I can't. The only reason I haven't finished school already (I've been in community college for 3 years) is mostly because of issues stemming from being TG; depression, anxiety, being outed and having to drop classes/switch schools, etc. Transitioning is something that HAS to happen before I can live a relatively normal life; aka go to school as a normal guy. I have a really good chance of this in Seattle here; I've been seeing a TG therapist for months now and she's networked with lots of TG specialists/doctors who can help me on my path. South bend...not so much.

Awesome- thanks! South Bend is located in northern indiana, but for TG resources I'm willing to travel to southern Michigan or south-east IL (within 2 hours driving distance if I move there).

You do realize you are closer to Chicago then southeast Illinois right?  Going to south-east Illinois is kind of silly if you have a major city with a ton of therapists , doctors and support groups an hour and a half away.  Why are you unwilling to travel to Chicago?  It is a great city, I used to live there.  Southbend is relatively close to Chicago.  I know it sounds silly, but why turn your back on a major metro area with a ton of TG resources. I know the Chicago area very well, and you are being a little silly going to downstate Illinois, when the Chicago metro area is much much closer.

Southeastern Illinois is also pretty far from South Bend, IN.  There is nothing down there but corn and soybeans.
Central Illinois is a little better, but you are still significantly closer to Northeastern Illinois and the Chicago metro area.  It is the closest major city to you where you are living.

My mistake-- I thought Chicago WAS part of south-eastern IL. Shows you how much geography I know for that area. I guess a better estimate would be around the southern end of Lake Michigan, yes?
