The camp Australian musical has had to accept compromises to make it to Broadway, writes Bernard Lagan in New York.
Tony Sheldon knows exactly how many times he has shuffled onto a stage to play Bernadette, the sardonic, weary Sydney transsexual who finds unlikely outback love in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. It is 1202 times, over five years, in three countries, an ebullient Sheldon, bouncing in his brown suede high heels, tells the New York media who have gathered in a wintry Ninth Avenue basement during a break in Priscilla's rehearsals for its Broadway opening this month.
''I had no idea it would come this far. And I certainly didn't think I'd come with it,'' says Sheldon, 55, of his improbable journey aboard Priscilla.
