Granddaughter wants to be a boy

I'm a grandmother of a little girl of eight. She's the fourth daughter of my son, but the only child of his second marriage. She stayed with me recently when her parents went on a trip and told me she wished she was a boy. She said she thinks her father wishes she hadn't turned out to be another girl. Might she have a gender identity disorder? She's a bit of a tomboy and quite sporty. Should I get her to talk more about it, just in case I can help by telling her that many people have gender issues?

Best not assume that this is strictly a gender dysphoria issue.
