Yup. It sure does. Just got my 2nd treatment today, and it hurt even worse than the first one. Which surprised me because it seemed the first treatment thinned out my facial hair quite a bit. I'm not a masochist or anything, but this kind of torture is the good kind of torture.
Here are some pics ... for no reason really. Perhaps someone can find them amusing. Or educational. The red dots are the remaining hair follicles. You can see that I have the largest concentration around my chin area. Yes it's sore like a sunburn, the redness should go away after a couple of days.

I'm about to undergo similiar torture haha, Samantha I'm excited :D lol
I really hope it thins out my facial hair first treatment too :D The redness doesn't look too bad, couple of days not bad :)
I'm excited for you Safiyah! It's way worth it!
For comparison, I'm going to upload a picture of my first laser treatment, so you can see how much just my first treatment has thinned out my facial hair.
Yes, yes it does. I found that it wasn't as bad the second or third time except for the upper lip. During the first treatment my eyes watered so bad they filled up those little goggles they have you wear.
Someone else on this board mentioned using ice packs right after treatment and it works. Instead of a couple of days it just one day for me.
Your face looks pretty good, mine is more red than that after treatment.
Yay, progress!
Thanks Hannah. This isn't directly after treatment. This is about 6 or 7 hours after the brutal attack on my face. The overall redness has gone away, but the area around the follicles are still quite red.

Aww excellent :)
Hannah, Cindy said about the tears filling those little googles up :(
Right now I have a light mustache and goatee, so it's not as bad. Still not looking forward to the pain though :'(

It hurts but it's totally worth it. It's over quickly and the awful beard is going away.
If you think laser hurts - try electrolysis. OUCH!!!!

It is over quickly, only about 5 minutes. Unless your talking about the zaps. Because you get done with one painful zap, and then there's another... and then another.. AND ANOTHER... AND ANOTHER!!!!
It may be done pretty quickly, but it feels like an eternity when it's happening. But it is soooooooooo worth it.
Sorry to barge in, but I just wanted to say that the pictures are really interesting. I didn't realize that one laser treatment thinned out the hair so much.
Looks very painful.
Did they ice you?
Put on hydrocortisone?
My skin look a little inflamed which is gone in an hour. What laser power level did they use. Have they ever done a 'male' face before?
I'm very nervous, I have nothing like that. Ouch
Worried
Cindy
I just had my third treatment 3 weeks ago. It feels like getting slapped in the face. What bothers me more than the pain is when the laser head doesn't fire after the recharge indicator goes off.... always scares me, lol. I haven't started though so my facial hair didn't thin nearly as fast as yours.... damn testosterone. lol
I found cold wet wash cloths on your face really suck the heat out after the treatment. Aloe Vera gel helps took a few hours later. Welcome to the Fried Follicle Club! :icon_flamed:
Samantha, you really got a GREAT ;D reduction from your first laser treatment. The stubborn hairs that remained for the second treatment are probably rooted deeper or they are thicker, and that's why the second treatment felt like it hurt more. If you can, ask what type of laser they are using, what spot size, and what energy level in joules. That will tell everything you need to know about your treatment.
I'm still dealing with electrolysis because my beard is mostly red, blonde, and gray. :(
Hum, I guess the effects really vary based on how thick the hair is. Contrary to your results, my redness goes away within an hour of my treatments and I don't have any lingering red spots. I have even had lunchtime sessions and nobody at work was the wiser after I got back. Electrolysis on the other hand, I need to do on a Friday after work because my face looks like it got attacked by a tentacle monster for the rest of the day. Then it looks like mild-moderate acne for 2-3 more days.
Anyway, it's amazing that you got such great results from just one session. Hopefully you'll only need a few more :)
Well I woke up this morning, and the redness around the follicles is almost completely gone. They put aloe on my face after the treatment. The initial redness that I had went away quickly, but the redness around the follicles took about a day. The thicker spots are still a little red. But I'm recovering 10x faster than I did with my first treatment.
The laser appears to be about 1 inch in diameter, I told them to use the highest setting (of 3 settings that they tested on me), and as for the power, I have no idea.
I didn't find it too bad, I've had three treaments now and barely get any hair growth at all - and I've paid for a course of six!
What I found the worst is that damn smell of burning hair - makes me heave!
Totally worth it though!
I'll know that pain soon enough. Going to make a first appointment within the next month.. hopefully by the middle of next month at the latest.
Like you... I'm more than willing to deal with any of the pain!
Yes it hurts like HELL! ANd yes the worst part was the pimples. I had it really really bad, worse than that even the first few times.
After a while it doesnt get that bad, thankfully.
Make sure to use Aquaphor , it'll help a lot
I had my 8th treatment on my face this week, so I feel your pain. It's soooo much faster than electro though. The red spots (perifollicular edema) means the laser is working and destroying the hair. Mine usually go away within 24 hours. Put a good amount of any non-alcohol containing moisturizer on afterwards. Right under your nose, on your top lip is the worst. But, it's quick.
:)
Most of the redness is gone now, it's just a little sore. The laser seems to darken the hairs quite a bit, so the area's look darker than normal. I'm hoping by tomorrow morning, the soreness fades and I can shave.

I usually wait 48 hours before shaving my face, and then only with a very, very gentle touch and a fresh blade. After awhile (3-4th treatment) you'll notice it starts growing back slower and slower.

Ok so here are some new pics of about 30 hours after the procedure. You'll see most of the redness is gone, and it should finish clearing up over the next day. The one patch under my chin is dark, but that's because the hairs were singed and are darker. That's how my entire face looked after my first laser treatment.

Looks much better.
I think it looks darker because the melanin has been zapped. It takes a while for the dead hair, or no longer rooted hair to get out. I was told that if possible don't shave but let the hairs come to the surface and wash them off. Moisturise always. I try to three times a day.
Oh I was given ice packs at the end of each session and that also helps. In fact the waiting room always has a few people holding ice packs to various parts of their body ::)
You can tell who has had a Brazillian  :laugh:Sorry, couldn't resist that.
Cindy
Hmmmm, interesting. My experience was different. Painful during the treatment, then red for a few minutes afterwards.
The only time I get a pimple is when the hair couldn't get out.
Sami! OUCH GIRL! You're scaring me. I should be scheduling my first battle with laser sometime this month or so...I hope. I'm am light olive complected and my beard is dark brown/black. I know the Dr. told me (because my GID can be bad) that my brain still sees more of the "boy" in me since my beard-shadow is apparent, although I have had some decent results with my HRT the past 5 months or so.
What type of laser did they use on you?
All this is good to know though. Thanks for posting.
Stephie
It didn't hurt too much for me. I'm on a laser power of 28, don't know what that means either  The areas of dense hair hurt, such as the upper lip. You want to have a nice close shave before you go. Any hairy bit hurt and stink at the same time. My ladies put ice packs on after they have done which reduces redness and swelling. Although now I don't bother because it doesn't hurt anymore. They also put some topical hydro-cortisone cream on which again reduces any swelling. Any pain has been dispelled by the results as far as I'm concerned.

I have been pretty lucky I guess, just had my 4th treatment last week. I only stay red for a couple hours and then it fades. Face is slightly tender for about a day but nothing too bad and I don't break out from it. I don't find it hurts to much except for the upper lip, especially right under the nose, that is awful.
Hi, I have a quick question since were on the subject of the laser. I know I they say that the darke hair gets the best results and the other colors like blond or gray or red dont get the good results, so my questions is, what if you dyed your beard with a black dye like "Just for men" will that make the laser more effective, I have some gray, I could turn it black real easy then laser and good by beard or is that just wishful thinking? Aloha.
Jennie
Jennie - it's the colour of the roots that matters, not the hair itself (the laser penetrates the skin and cooks the roots of the hair) so dye won't help anything because it barely penetrates past the skin suface level.
Kyril is correct. It's the roots that matter, and dye won't reach that deep. :( Sorry.
I'm trying to schedule in my second appointment. I had my first back in early Feb but have been too damn busy to get another one in early march. My face looked like I had been in a house fire for about 3-4 days, and didnt calm down completely for a week, but it has made a huge difference already. The hair growth is patchy now but I have gone from a permashadow to only needing to shave every couple of days. There are obviously patches of remaining hair growth, and on one side you can literally see lines of facial hair, so if I grew it I would look like a badger... People keep asking if I have lent on something, and my mum swears it looks like veins in my face... Awkward enough, but I am not out to everybody yet... :-/ I'm hoping to get the next one in this week, or early next week, so at the very least I can get rid of my stripey face!

If it's a Candela Laser, then 28J is the setting which describes the amount of energy being pulsed. It goes up to 30J Max. My tech usually uses 26J/28J depending on the area he's treating.
I get some lotion at my place... no ice packs. :(
Yes, it hurts a lot! But it's working well with me. I had my 10th session last week (lightsheer 25/30 kj) and I may have about 10% of the initial hair (rough estimation), more than half of it on the mustache area, where facial hair is usually most resilient. For me it worked like this: after the 5th or 6th session I would need no concealer to go out, just a little make up. The shadow became by then nearly imperceptible, even in male mode. Now, after 10 treatments I could go out in role without make up foundation if only considered the nonexistent shadow (I keep shaving everyday however); I just use very little make up foundation however (btw, this effect is not obtainable in the immediate days after the treatment). Now that Androcur is helping, I do not foresee more than two to three treatments. After that, I will consider if I do some electro for the very blond hairs, which are relatively few and do not cause any shadow, only dysphoria when they grow and I pass my hand over my skin.
The good news: the less hair remaining, the lesser the pain each time. At least for me, the red spots became significantly less after the 4th or 5th treatment and lately they disappear within a few hours of the treatment. The bad news is this: my dermo and my endo have told me, laser alone does not get rid of all of the facial hair, not completely. Some or many of the blonde ones will likely remain unaffected and as far as (dehydro)testosterone is produced new hair cells may form. That's why some girls do electro afterwards. But stopping testo production after laser will generally do the trick: I know a couple of girls who never did any electrolysis. Also, like in every other thing, everyone is different in this department. I wish you all good luck with this. Getting rid of most of the facial hair has improved my confidence a lot!
I have my 3rd laser session tonight. So far I haven't thought to take pictures, this time I'll try to take some. I don't recall my face looking anywhere near as bad after a session, but after the first, it was fairly tender and bumpy for about a week. The place where I go uses LightSheer equipment, I've never asked about the setting, but tonight I will. Last time the technician said she'd never seen anyone who could tolerate the pain as well as I can - I was just sitting there, making idle chit-chat as she lasered my face. So it'll be interesting to see what the setting is.
(Caution: TMI ahead... you were warned...)
(tonight I'm getting treatment #1 on the scrotum... don't want to take NO chances with hair down there...)
Wow! My face doesn't look anything like that after laser! It goes a little red for about an hour and then just goes back normal. I usually meet a friend directly after I have it, who doesn't know that I've just been there and not once has she commented.
Usually for about a week following the hair grows a little stubbly which is stubborn to shave, but it's nothing notacable, maybe just looks like I havn't shaved that day at worst. Then after about 7-10 days it's just smooth for a couple of weeks until my next treatment.
Maybe I'm just lucky, or maybe my laser treatment isn't as powerful as yours! Btw I use the sk:n clinic in the UK and have had 8 sessions so far.
Well the place I go to is also a school where they train technicians. They use some pretty high end stuff, and I told them to use the highest possible safe setting.
The pain has been terrible, enough to cause my eyes to water pretty badly. But the results have been worth it. On the first treatment alone, I lost about 60% of the hair thickness.
Here is a bad picture of me 6 days after the treatment. It's already cleared up, and looking pretty decent.

Did 6 sessions of laser then have done about 8 sessions of electrolysis. I would trade anything for electrolysis to hurt like laser. Electrolysis is what separates the guys from the women. Guys would never be able to handle this crap.
Thanks Dana!! ;D ;D You just confirmed my lingering doubts about being TS.
I must be really lucky. It didn't hurt that much for me on the first session, I had hardly any redness and I noticed that my beard was a quite a bit lighter when It grew a few days after. I have a whole lot of blonde hairs though, and they will not succumb to lasers. That means I'll have undergo the torture of electrolysis at some time in the future...so maybe not so lucky after all.
So for those who have done it, did laser first, then electrolysis work well for you? Is it just faster results, or did you save significant money that way too (due to fewer sessions and whatnot?)
I'm curious because I'm fairly certain some of my facial hair is blonde (I haven't let it grow fully in quite a while) so I may end up needing electrolysis either way. I hadn't really considered laser until this thread though.
See if you can find a place that uses the LightSheer Duet (trade name). It is said to attack the blood supply to the follicles, not the hair itself - it does not carbonize the hair (I just had it done for the first time with that on Session #3). I'll let you know if it seriously reduces my grey, but I won't know for a few weeks.
I just had my first laser (GentleLase) session and it's a facial massage compared to electrolysis. I used my usual electro combo of lidocaine 5% topical (over the counter) plus hydrocodone bitartrate 7.5mg/acetaminophen for laser today, and it was a breeze. I think I might not even take the hydrocodone next time.
To everybody who finds laser really painful, what anesthetic do you use? I'd recommend lidocaine or EMLA topical if you're not already using it.
I use no anesthetic for my face, but I did use EMLA for the scrotum. There was no pain at all during the downstairs part, but the face was painful. Not after, but during, particularly in the mustache area.

Faster results and a ton of money saved I would say. I started with electro and wasn't happy with the speed of results and decided to give laser a shot, omg I'm still kicking myself for not starting laser a long time ago.
As far as the blonde hair, some of mine is too, but if the majority of your beard is black/brown, laser is well worth it. I'll still need a fair amount of electro to get rid of the blonde stuff, but since it's hardly visable I'm in no hurry there.

I find it pretty painful, but then again I use nothing for anesthetic before or after. My face is neon red for a few hours afterward but looks like a mild sunburn within half a day. Soreness usually last 3-4 days for me. I had my most recent session 2 days ago and I'm still a little red and tender, this is my 4th session.

That is the one used on me. It works exactly the same as other lasers. The duet part is the larger laser head which incorporates a vacuum, they use it on large skin areas where it can do a larger area than the smaller laser.

This describes me pretty well. On my 2 day growth, I don't really get anything that you can see with the exception of that one trouble spot on my chin, and a light shadow on my upper lip. But my beard area was practically eliminated on just the first treatment.
*Trembling in fear* Okay you girls have prepped me enough. I'll be going under the laser gun tomorrow. We'll see how much I can tolerate the pain. Plus, I have a lot more hair that you girls do, so I am imagining a lot of tears rolling down my cheeks. :P

This one.
Common sense tells me anything sold in an infomercial and available for three easy payments must be junk, but my eagerness has made me vulnerable. I need someone to tell me that this device sucks before I hemorrhage $500 on it. How do they know me so well?
It is useless. Has nowhere near the power of the salon lasers. Save your money for a professional job.
Cindy
That's good to know. I keep hearing conflicting reviews on it. I'm guessing people that paid the bill for it want to feel better about it.
It may have an effect on very light hair but for us ::)
Cindy
Your $500 would be MUCH better spent at a professional laser hair removal clinic. There is NO home laser/diode/LED device available that is capable of permanently removing hair. Any device powerful enough to perform that task is regulated and sold only to medical professionals.
stick with it! I've been having my face done since '99.. the pain is pretty much non existent for me at this point, and my red blotchyness is gone in a few hours.
It definitely gets easier over time.
Ok it's true! It hurts like a Mo-Fo! ;p
It DID help to have lidocaine cream at 23%. It numbed my face really well. The part that hurt was right under the nose. WOW, talk about making a grown girl cry. OUCH.
Still, I left with a Star on my forehead (just like in Kinder) for being such a good girl throughout. ;)

Congrats Honey,
It does get less painful each time as the hair density decreases, also a lot quicker, my face now takes 15 mins as there is little hair left.. I've got a follow up session next tuesday. Going to start on my legs as well, so I've done face, chest, tummy,
And remember Big Girls do cry

am actally intersex (though not to such such a large extent), i was still pretending to be a boy last year. 19 years old 6 hairs on my chin, very fine hairs above the lip; dad commented on the un-manlyness. the shock he had when i told him, jokes on him now. there is just too little to even try to shave it so i just pluck them out, but now i been told plucking damges the roots which makes laser harder.
who has a "real" facial hair who also pluck them before, is it really harder? been doing it a alot now so its a bit late to stop (they grow out again in 3 weeks)
is the cost based on per hair? it needs to be done but it seems to costly to get rid of six, six whole hairs
Hi Fate,
It won't anything like we are paying and will take a few minutes. Go in for a test and quote I think you will be pleasantly surprised. You sound that you are at a hair level that most woman have when going for laser, rather than our somewhat increased hair level for women.

If you have only a few hairs, electrolysis may give you more bang for your buck. With laser, you pay per area per session. The areas I've seen offered are upper lip, chin, neck, or whole face. With electrolysis, you pay by time. Since it is done one hair at a time, you are essentially paying by the hair. So if you have sparse hair, I'd wager you'd save money with electrolysis. Plus, electrolysis is more effective at permanently destroying a follicle.
Some laser places will charge by time too. I pay by the minute, and I'm saving a ton of money vs what I'd be paying if i were paying the rates for face+chest+stomach+pubic mound at some places.
Fate you'd definitely want to go the electro route for that small a number of hairs.
I look in Argos and on e-bay all the time rubbing my chin about all the lazer gizmo's and think of getting one .
Inside my head (which is very aaarrrrrgh) im saying no no no don't be stupid.
That is easier said than done ....lol
What if i was to buy one and weaken what is there already and then get zapped by the professionals .
I have had all sorts of thoughts go through my head that is more like self harm than treatment for dealing with issues of hair growth on my body.
None of which i have carried out you may be glad to hear but i did but the most expensive electric shaver i could ...blagging myself that i have done everything i can to get the closest shave i can and i can carry it around with me .
Now i have had my 6th appointment with my theropist and given feed back to my GP and fingers crossed charring cross allow me to join so i can get real treatment and save me from my D.I.Y skills .... argos is a bad influence .... lol
