So tomorrow I'm testifying before the Rhode Island House Judiciary Committee to support adding, "gender identity and expression" to the state's Hate Crimes Monitoring Act. I wanted to get something nice to wear so I went shopping and invited my mom..
After we got home, I tried on what I bought and asked her what she thought... Until then she had never seen me in a skirt and heels.... We talked for awhile about styles of shoes we liked and disliked; she looked me up and down and said, "hold on a minute." After a minute or two in her closet, she came out with a cardigan and said, "This was a little too big for me but it'll look nice on you." It was perfect :-) She looked a little more and gave me a girdle after I said how concerned I was about my belly...
For the first time in my life, I felt like I was her daughter. She looked at me and smiled (and said that my skirt was too short, lol) and I saw pride in her eyes. Because of her I feel empowered and confident about tomorrow... I love you, Mom.
That is awesome and very touching Jessica :)

Wow, Jessica, how wonderful! And what a wonderful thing YOU are doing! Break a leg, girl, I'll pray you do well (I know you will). You do us proud.
Jessica, that's a moment where many of us can only wish we had the same opportunity. Your mom deserves a ton of hugs and kisses from everyone here. Congratulations on appearing and speaking as you're doing. The public needs to understand we're normal, intelligent, well-mannered people, and that's how we wish to be seen and treated. I'm *so* proud of you (and your Mom!) right now. :)
