David Bowie was already playing with gender when his third album's cover featured the singer in a dress, but with his reinvention as Ziggy Stardust in 1972 all conventional roles went out the window.

Boy George was one of the most famous androgynous faces of the '80s, finding huge success with Culture Club and taking the era's already-ambiguous fashion sense even further.
