Title: Will T make me taller?
Post by: MRH on April 10, 2011, 07:36:35 AM
Ok so im 18 at the moment and i'm not yet on the road to transistioning so it could be a couple of years before I go on T. Im only 5'2/5'3 and im not happy with my height at all. I dont wanna be really tall but if I could grow a few inches that would be brilliant. I was wondering if T will change that at all.

T made my FTM brother's torso longer. a lot  of the shirts he used to wear he can't anymore so he just gives them to me because I haven't gotten any taller.

hope that helps

Likely not much if any if youre well into puberty. Estrogen that spikes up when both boys and girls enter puberty seals your growth plates (girls through high E levels, and boys excess testosterone converting into estrogen) (hence why boys are normally taller, they get a few more years of growing before they hit ubety then girls). It's posible, but if you hit puberty a number of years ago already, youre likely not going to get any long bone growth.. though you might get some torso growth as increased muscle mass in the back cause the spine to stretch slightly.

I wouldn't count on it, but I certainly seem taller (think that's probably more from top surgery though  ;)).

*Sigh* I really hope there is some change but looking at my grandads side of the family we are quite small although not as short as me. I just don't wanna be the guy whos girlfriend/boyfriend is miles taller. My 11 year old step sister is nearly the same height as me  :(

Plenty of short guys out there. I'm 5'4, just ended up in an art class with the teacher almost exactly my height and another male (and adult) student several inches shorter.

Growth is unlikely. I've heard some people say it's possible to grow an inch or two if you start testosterone in your teens.

On a similar note, this is about the 10th topic about this exact thing in the past few months, and just as many wanting general info on what T will do for them. Would it be possible to post a sticky with FAQs on testosterone's effects? It'd save a lot of repetition and searching, much of which isn't possible because "T" is too short to search and most people don't write it out fully.

If you are really lucky you may notice a slight increase since all the stuff between your bones expands. If it bothers you enough there is leg lengthening surgery. It's very unpleasant. You will be crippled for months.

I had 3 growth spurts in my youth.  One each at ages 16, 20, 24.  I had to buy a new set of dungarees in the Navy about 8 months after bootcamp because I was wearing "high water pants"   My dad had the same pattern according to my mom.  By brother is an inch or two now shorter.  At 6' 2" I am the tallest of my uncles and cousins on both sides.  The closest is an uncle and a cousin at 5' 10".
T may cause some growth, but it is responsible to cap your bones between ages 18-27 to prevent you to grow any further.  HGH is the hormone responsible for growth.  It is possible that low doses of T may trigger some HGH activity.  It is up to your pituitary gland and your genetics because it does all of the hormone timing and dose control.  Any growth beyond 2" is very unusal here.
The eunuchs of old that were castrated just before the onset of puberty really grew taller than the normal males because of the absence of T.  These people really stood out, as the apostle Philip experienced when Philip overtook a eunuch's chariot who was a royal treasurer.  Philip witnessed to him and then baptised him in the river.
Just accept what God gives you.  Remember, Michael J. Fox does well with his shorter stature!
  Joelene.

If you've got a bit of a curve in your spine, and you gain muscle mass there from the T, might it straighten the curve out a bit, giving you a little extra height?

I have the same problem, really bad case of lordosis and I have been wondering the same thing. I would reckon that improving your posture and straightening your spine should make a difference in height, but I doubt it would make a huge difference. I just had top surgery last Thursdy and my surgeon pointed out that I have terrible posture (I was well aware of that already...) and suggested I do pilates to straighten my spine. :embarrassed:

It's hard for any of us to give you a definite yes or no answer, since hormones effect everyone slightly different. Some people experience particular changes while others don't. However, most people who go on T don't seem to report any height difference, unless they're still in puberty, sometimes the T can jog your body into giving you a couple extra inches. But if you're not going on it for a few years, it's likely that you won't grow much taller. I have your same problem though, while I'm two inches taller than you, I'm not happy with my height - since I'm shorter than most of the men that I know, so to give myself two or three more inches, I stuff my shoes with paper - it's a little uncomfortable, and lifts would be better, but it's cheap and it works...until I take my shoes off.

Hey try to not fret too much. I'm 5'2" as well or 5'3" when I stand up straight which I never do. I get down about my height sometimes but over all I think it's not something to worry about too much. My fiancee is 8 inches taller then me and while I was somewhat 'eh' about it before I kind of like it now. I think part of height is how you present yourself. If you walk tall you'll be tall and if your always hiding and all scrunched up people will look at you as small. At least that's my two cents.

If you're really anxious about your height you can try getting height increasing shoes, I wore them for a while until I became more comfortable with my height. I work at an elite sporting institute so I am surrounded by guys and girls who are all around 6"7....:embarrassed: Some of the height increasing shoes can give you about 3" in height, and so long as you wear long pants it's not obvious at all. They are actually really quite comfortable

im glad you posted this because i had the same question. I'm only 4'10" !! my soon to be 8 year old sister is almost taller than me. my soon to be 6 year old bro is just below my shoulder i think. it sucks. I hope both of us will grow. I heard that sometimes you'll grow a little. Best of luck to you.
