I plan on going to the states for top surgery (I live in Canada) and am deciding between Dr. Brownstein and Dr. Garramone. The results of both surgeons are incredibly pleasing, I'm leaning towards Garramone but my decision will probably based on where I decide to vacation for a couple of weeks :)
My only issue is my Canadian passport. It's hard finding info online about changing my name on it, but a thousand times harder finding out how to change my gender. I probably have to have bottom surgery with letters from psychiatrists.
Is it possible to get across the border these days as a transgender person? Obviously if I give the guard my passport he'll see a male picture with a male name and a big F next to them. I guess I'm just paranoid about any phobic or discriminatory reactions. I don't think a border guard will kick my ass but I might get detained or refused, you know?
Has anyone else had experience with this?
(I'll probably be driving down from the Windsor/Detroit crossing, since I hate flying and love roadtrips.)
ps - also thinking of going with Dr. Beverly Fischer, she sounds like an incredibly person
Can't speak for the passport issue, but any of those surgeons are very experienced.
I chose Brownstein partly because i wanted an SF vacation, and loved it. I have already been to FL many times, so that swayed my decision.
Good luck!
Jay
If you are worried about trouble, just go through the Port Huron / Sarnia crossing; those guys are much more chill. I was really worried about being stopped for having people with three different nationalities of identifications in the vehicle. No problem at all.
