Title: Dilator 'skipping'
Post by: Debra on April 13, 2011, 04:32:11 PM
So lately, I've noticed that when inserting the dilator (fully lubed) that it has trouble going in.

it used to slide right in (once it got past the tighter part) but now instead it seems to get semi-stuck slightly and then it skips ahead. Then it gets stuck again and skips ahead again.

i've tried pulling it out some and trying again and it just keeps doing it. I'm not sure if maybe it's just extra dry in there or what.

Once I get it in finally and leave it in for the intended amount of time, I pull it out and it comes out no problem...and the 2nd bigger dilator goes in with no problems either.

I'm just wondering if it's extra dry in there now ... or I don't know if the granulated tissue that's at my opening is causing a problem.

Just curious if anyone else had this problem before.

I don't think the granulation tissue has anything to do with it--at 7 months I still have some granulation at the opening just under the urethra opening and have never experienced anything like this.  Try more lube and just ease it in, eventually things will get better.

tightening is causing most of the lube to be wiped off the dilator at that first tight spot you mentioned. After that it becomes essentially dry, so pressure causes it to slip ahead to the next tight spot it encounters, kind of like how tectonic plates slip and cause earthquakes :)

As Kristyn said, use more lube. After the first tight spot, withdraw and apply a little more. Keep working it in and out slowly (can be fun lol) and adding more lube each time until it loosens enough to allow the lube to get all the way to the back.

Sounds like a lubrication issue to me.  Maybe trying inserting some lube on your finger.  Something I had to do a few times.  Just make sure your hands are clean or use a sterile glove.

I think the best way to skip a dilator is to throw it sidearm and get it to hit the water at the correct angle.

I squirt some lube inside as well as putting it on the dilator. The lube I use comes in a tube, like toothpaste, so it's easy to put the nozzle inside and squeeze the tube.

An ortho vaginal applicator apparently works well.  You can search on Amazon.com.  These will allow you to squirt the lube inside of you.  I know Stardust used one of these.

[day 40 post op]
I find I get initially stuck at around 5-6inches each time and just relax for a minute then rotate and then push in then back off and rotate repeat etc etc... takes 10-30mins to reach full depth (7inches) from the tightness etc. I've never taken it out to add more lube as the thought of doing so seems like it would be more work...like starting again :P
experiment and find what works best!
I've found pushing down a little on top of the dilator while pushing in helps it go kinda under the tight muscles at the beginning, it feels like an archway when I stick my finger in and the bottom is just kinda more flatish so I help to push it down on top to dip under... helps take the edge off and slid in easier. But this is for suporn style vagina so not sure if this would work or be applicable xP

Well this was only happening sometimes and I tried adding more lube but nothing seems to work. I just try to be careful and it only happens with initial insertion.....(I always start with #2/blue and then do either green, then orange....or just orange/#4).

The last day or so, it's started happening like everytime now. Frustrating. I tried putting more lube in first with my finger, tried to keep adding lube to the dilator and re=inserting...none of it seems to stop the 'skipping' for initial insertion. It does seem to be that its just dry though so I dunno.

Try twisting the dilator as you insert, like using a corkscrew.  Are you using enough lube, I have found if I don't use enough it is not as easy to insert.  Also is the skipping stopping you reaching full depth, if not and it isn't causing excess pain is it really an issue.  It still seems to be a lubrication issue to me.  Might be worth mentioning this to your doctor to see what he/she has to say.

This afternoon I dilated for the first time without a condom [day 43] and just before full-depth I noticed this feeling of "skipping". I started with a decent amount of lube but after the first four inches I pulled it out and put some more on and felt as though I had enough lube on. after I finished I kinda figured it might of just been the texture of the glass of the dilator and the lube along with the muscle gripping and giving as I pushed in for depth. So most likely normal and just a mix of the factors related to the conditions, thus some notice it and others don't. perhaps.
It was kind of annoying as you'd push and all of a sudden it would kinda pop and slip further in which made me worry I would put too much force against the back wall. but meh..... see how it goes :P *sips coffee*.

Update: Giving the dilator slight twists seems to help! And once it's in, I can pull it almost all the way out and it will slide in fine the next time (as do the bigger ones afterward) so I'm feeling a little better about that.
