...someone being turned down for HRT or surgery because they havent had gender dysphoria since age 3 [or a very early age]?
This be a concern of mine.
I haven't had years of dysphoria...infact I really haven't even identified as trans until last Oct....so less than a year...I have had 2 individual session with my therapist and at our next apt we are writing my letters for T & top surgery
I started T approx 4 months after I first figured out I was trans. I had not even tried to live as male until that point, though I was always male identified I had no idea transition was possible, so played the girl role well.
A therapist will want a certain number of sessions with you to determine you are trans. If you truly are you have nothing to worry about. A good therapist knows what questions to ask.
Be yourself and don't worry.

Not likely.
Some of us don't realise until we crash and burn in our 50's, and feel that it is a revelation. We only realise we always felt this way after quite a few therapy sessions with a gender specialist. By that stage we have already got a pretty solid diagnosis anyway.
I am really only now coming to terms with it. I haven't lived as a man and I don't remember ever expressing that until now. I'm not exactly out yet but my therapist said that in a couple more months and with a few sessions with my parents she wouldn't mind writing me a letter to start hormones.
