Title: My parents are willing to let me see a gender therapist if they pick one out
Post by: Alex201 on April 15, 2011, 03:35:54 PM
So thats good, right? But they tell me they dont want a therapist that is "biased". Their idea of biased is someone who will help me transition. They want someone who is more likely to tell me I'm nutty. So I got a problem...I do not have a car..[am working on getting one but need a job and money first] and will depend on my parents to get to therapy..and if my gender therapist even mentions about writing me a letter for T or whatnot...I know for a fact they will stop taking me to them. They are extremely biased and ony want to send me to a therapist that wont help me with transition. Now what I could do is just wait until I am on my own and then see a therapist...but the truth is my gender dysphoria is getting unbearable and I dont know how much longer I can wait.

I been sending in a lot of applications for jobs but have not heard back from any...I been doing all I can but dont seem to be getting anywhere. I dont know how long I can live with my dysphoria...

I went through the same exact thing with my parents. They okayed a therapist, but said the same thing, they didn't want him to be "biased". I also didn't have a car or a job. They did let me pick the therapist, but they wanted me to stop seeing him after the first session b/c he was polite enough to ask me how I would like to be addressed pronoun-wise.. I had to literally beg to go back each week. But they eventually got over it.

Be careful with who they pick though. If their idea of an unbiased therapist is just a regular one who doesn't specialize in gender you'll probably be fine. Most are understanding. But if their idea of an unbiased therapist is the same as my parents' was (like somebody from NARTH) then you may be better off waiting until you can see who you need to see. Somebody telling you that you are sick or wrong, or mentally disordered during every session, and telling your parents that you are at this stage of the game would do waaaaaaaay more harm than good.
