I just wanted to ask a very important question. How does one get his or her name changed on school diplomas? Can you even do that once the deed is done? How do explain the name difference to employers? Thanks.
In a word, yes. Cannot speak to what requirements schools might have now. Back in the early 90's, I just filled out a form in the Registrar's office, essentially no different than if I were changing an address. It really was that simple.
I never worried about having old JC diploma reprinted through because I did not care about my undergrad diplomas hanging on a wall. The transcripts were what mattered. There is no reference on the transcript to the name enrollment had originally taken place under.
It should be as going to the registrar or admissions... In some cases it is not unfortunately. They'll usually end up mailing you a new diploma at a later date...
I actually work at the registrar's office at my school. They will change the name, but they usually need proof that your name has legally been changed in order to do it. Then they will mail out a new diploma with the corrected name.

;D I'm so glad to hear that, that has been a concern of mine as well.

It's a lot harder when the degree is tied to published works like a PhD dissertation.
At my school I faxed in my court order of my name change to our alumni records office and they updated my record. Heck, we have an online searchable directory and if I do a search for my old name, nothing comes up. I can then order a new diploma online via the registrar's office.
I went to college in New York state, and after I changed my name in 2006, I asked them to change their records, and they did so. I think I sent them a copy of my name change document or something. I would like to get a new diploma, I think they want $20 for it.
