Title: is there such a thing as car hoarding
Post by: Elsa.G on April 28, 2011, 07:43:15 PM
do you think there is such a thing as car hoarding? i live with my mom and her husband, sadly. We moved into a new and bigger house in the winter with a really nice driveway and garage. Anyway since we got here her husband has been what i call hoarding, in a house of only us 3 we now have 7 cars in the garage and driveway and only one car belongs to me and my mother and its also the only one he uses because most of his cars are nothing but junk cars that break down or leak or something. Anyway im getting pretty sick of it, i dnt really invite anyone over my house because its so emberassing to see the driveway that looks more like a car dealer. I heard from my mother that he is also planning to buy another car that he saw on his way home, which angers me and my mom because we can barely afford to get by each week. Do you think this can be a form of hoarding or just the male ego thing

Sounds a bit odd. Why would anyone collect cars that don't work?

We call them rednecks.

And proper areas have restrictions about such things.

Cars that don't work are more ecological :).

It is a problem with cars, I also have some time heap of old wrecks (I had one time 4 cars and all was broken)
It is like old clothes which you don't use and lay in wardrobe, or buy something at thriftily store and never use it, same is the cars but they are just more visible

I'd have to check but I think we have to register them even if they don't work. And that would get expensive. It costs me about $650 to register a car for 12 months in Australia.

Over here in the UK you only have to spend money on them if they're on the road - insurance, mot, tax. If they're not on the tarmac, they're free to own. Wabisabi!

Well I have two 1983 Honda Preludes, one is for spares for the other, a restoration project which has been cancelled since I injured my shoulder a while back. It is destined for the For Sale ad's in the next couple of weeks.

Then there is my registered and regularly driven Honda City, and my ex's old car which my son used until he got his own and moved out. That is for sale too.

That is nothing compared to next door. He is a panel beater and spray painter, and regularly has people not pay for work done, so the cars end up in his yard. Last time I counted he had at least 8 in addition to his camper and sedan.Fortunately we are in the country and all on an acre or more.

Farms around here are all well endowed with old cars. It would cost money to get rid of them, so they sit in a paddock and slowly get cannabilised for parts.
Karen.

with the exception of certain collectible vehicles, I have always questioned keeping vehicles around that don't run...but if they run, I came from a family where several more vehicles than drivers was the norm.

Parents have six and I am actually down to three.  Would probably reconsider if Texas ever changed its registration fee schedules, but at the moment, it costs me less than $250 combined for the tags on an annual basis.

Cars are pretty much a Twentieth Century technology.  It's 2011 on my calender.  Fewer people will use fewer cars as time goes on.

Feet, bikes (both are great for keeping you from having to ask if those pants make your ass look too big, really, it's not the pants at all), light rail for interurban, mag-lev high speed trains for distance.

So so true.

Look in the line of customers lunching at McPuke's and the line at the Yogurt shop, they tend to be different sizes. No idea why

with my 130lbs and 6' 2" I can afford to use car
and I use even for trips like 1 mile short
btw and public transport is not cure for all, if you want to visit some stores which isnt at same place but in area like 5 miles, then car is only way (something like robotic taxi will be better but now is just a car)

Looks like I deleted the last bit of my post that said, "if you are buying heaps, and just parking them in the driveway with no intention of getting them running to use or sell, that is not normal."
Definitely a hoarder rather than a collector.

I agree, but then I have a 1981 and an 88 Scirocco as well as a 90 cabriolet. I'll get a wreck, have it stripped and sent to the junk yard in under a week.

We call them rednecks.

Combining the two of them explains everything.  They are call "Yard Art, Southern Style".

Just a thought, but I've noticed that men tend to hord things when they feel a bit insecure.

If i ever have to ride a push bike anywhere i ll end it all.  I have over a hundred acres here ,two four wheel drive trucks, one race car, two project cars ,a beater pickup, kept because it was a gift from a friend with cancer, and it spins excellent donuts, and soon a crappy little escort wagon, for gas mileage ,and to stuff with subwoofers and SIX THOUSAND  WATTS of amplifiers  to make driving something so boring bearable. I used to build at least a car a year, but now my job kicks my ass.

Get him to hoard skateboards instead...they take up less room.

There is a subtle difference between hoarding and collecting.  Hoarding is a subcategory of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and is characterised by accumulating abnormal quantities of objects that have no value and impossible to let them go.  However, collectors feel a sense of passion and pride in the objects that they collect.  So the questions remains are you a hoarder or collector?

Kind regards
