Title: Hair skin and nail vitamins, anyone ever use and do they help at all?
Post by: Jenna_Nicole105 on May 03, 2011, 02:14:05 AM
I ask because while being a natural skeptic, I started taking some a little over two weeks ago anyway (figured why not.. didn't cost much and I'll take any possible advantage I can get to accelerate growth)

Already it seems like my hair is growing a little bit quicker, my nails as well.. though hair was my main reason for taking.

Granted it might all be in my head and it likely is, but the back of my hair especially sure seems to be growing like grass... at least in comparison to what I'm used to.

Anyone have any experience with these at all and if so did they seem to help even a little bit?

I'm honestly trying to gauge how likely the faster growth is nothing more than wishful thinking on my part.

I take biotin every day. It's a vitamin that a lot of 80s hairband guys used to use to grow out their hair. It works well and strengthens nails. I've noticed acclerated growth in my hair and my nails are much stronger

I bought a hair, skin, and nails vitamin from walmart and I noticed a considerable increase in the speed that my nails grew.  It definately gave me healthier hair but I am not sure how much faster it was growing.

Many "Once Daily" type multi-vitamins contain varied amounts of biotin, in addition to the other good stuff your body needs :)

I also take Biotin as well as other vitamins.  Does it help?  Sure does.  I have noticed my hair and nails are both stronger.  But multivitamins just don't have enough.  I usually take 2 tablets a day which is 10,000 mcg.  I get it at Wal-Mart.  I am a guitar player and if I do not take it my nails are just trashed.  And who would not like healthier looking hair?

I've been using these products for three months - 2 or 3 different ones. They're a bit hard to find. My Walgrens seems to carry a stock of them. I don't need the $15 a month extra expense, but as my electrolygist said, us women are high maintainance.  I think they seem to work, though like every other development I look for, not nearly as fast or as well as I would hope. My nails definitely break less. I've actually got 2 or 3 that extend beyond the finger end. I don't know about hair changes, though I think I am getting less in the brush. I'm going by the old saying, every little bit helps.

Not in high enough doses to matter.

Take it for a couple of months before you decide.  That is about how long it took for me to see any difference.

It takes about 6 months to really notice because it takes nails that long to grow out.

Well maybe I was remembering a bit optimistically then.  Just don't expect to wake up tomorrow and have stronger nails.  Ain't gonna happen.

I'm really hoping it will help my thinning hair.  Sounds like all the B vitamins will help with this?

QuoteAnd while you're reaching for that bottle of B12, don't shortchange yourself on the other B vitamins, particularly biotin. According to experts, this nutrient is also essential for hair growth. It's so important that biotin supplements are often prescribed right alongside medical hair loss treatments such as Propecia, Proscar, or minoxidil (Rogaine, Ronoxidil).

"Biotin is a major component in the natural hair manufacturing process -- it is essential to not only grow new hair, but it also plays a major role in the overall health of skin and nails," says Andrew Lessman, clinical researcher and creator of Your Vitamins, an all-natural supplement line manufactured in Henderson, Nevada.

While Lessman says we can get biotin from our diet -- it's present in foods like liver and egg yolks -- we would have to consume thousands of calories daily to get what our hair needs. That's one reason why he and so many dermatologists suggest biotin supplements.

Indeed, Daly says he routinely recommends up to 3 mg of biotin daily for his hair loss patients, while Lessman developed a healthy hair, skin, and nails product containing 2 mg of biotin per daily dosage, which he believes is the minimum for healthy hair.

The recommended daily intake (RDI) of biotin is a scant 300 mcg -- and even the healthiest diets usually contain no more than 30 to 50 mcg, says Lessman.

There have been studies that show if you can get the vitamins from an actual food, it will work better for you than just taking a supplement.  All I can say is: Olive Oil!!! (also, I will find cite this information if someone questions it!)
