"Reaction to representative a case of selective outrage" (Our Views, May 4) urged Democrats to run a "serious" candidate against state Rep. Sally Kern. Kern's 2010 opponent, Brittany Novotny, was a "serious" candidate. I assume The Oklahoman considers her status as a transgender individual to be the main factor in deeming her an unworthy opponent to unseat Kern. In fact, Novotny rarely mentioned her private life during the campaign, choosing instead to focus on the issues — infrastructure, educational reform and economic improvement.

Novotny even went so far as to provide solutions to the problems plaguing her district. Kern spent her time on the campaign trail reciting her religious beliefs and reaffirming her commitment to preserving "values."
