Title: Any Straight FTM Gleeks?
Post by: KamTheMan on May 11, 2011, 06:57:19 PM
Is it a silly question? Maybe. But one of my favorite things to do is follow tv shows. And some of the ones I watch are kind of "girly." Thoughts?

I'm not straight, but I am a Gleek.  I don't think it really matters if you like a show that is "girly".  I think anyone of any gender can enjoy whatever show they want to.  Do/watch what you enjoy. :)

No it's not okay.  Hand over your man card asap.
Seriously though, I'm going to go ahead and bet that girls appreciate guys whom they don't have to fight for the remote.

haha, i appreciate the responses. i know it's a dumb question, i'm just in a weird spot where now i'm sort of questioning every aspect of myself.   i just think it's funny when i'm cruising around in my car looking like a tough guy and then glee is blasting through my speakers.

Maybe this is showing my age.....but what is a gleek?   I am guessing somebody who watches Glee? If so, afraid I don't fall into that category.  The only time I catch a torturous 30 seconds or so of it is when I am waiting for Raising Hope which I love!  Sorry, I don't like movies or shows that fall into a musical category.  If I want to see that, I go to an opera.

If that is not what Gleek is, please educate me.

I'm not straight but I just started watching Glee today after avoiding it for so long and I have to admit I'm in love. It's a really really cute show. Plus even if it means I have to turn in my man card I'm a huge fan of most musicals.

I tell anyone I meet who hates musicals to watch Sweeny Todd.

I've never tried Glee, but it's slowly moving up on my to do list.

YES! I'm here for you. And honestly who gives a ->-bleeped-<- if it's a stereotypically "girly" show. It's amazing!

^This. I love Raising Hope! The intro episode had me in hysterics.

Personally I liked Glee a lot in the first season, but then it started doing a bunch of flashy broadway stuff in the second which just doesn't appeal to me. I prefer stories to sing-alongs.

I love the song covers but don't watch the show. I think the acting is terrible hahah.

i am a straight FTM gleek it is a good show and it is hilarious its good writing. i just wish there was an FTM character.

although i was kinda turned off from glee when people pointed out how transphobic it is and there have been a few instances of transphobia but no outward hating or un realistic portrayals like a bunch of other shows. so i will continue being a gleek and singing in the shower.

Wait what transphobic stuff has been in there? Granted I just started watching but I'm on episode 9 of the first season and I haven't seen anything yet. Man only episode 9... they sure do cover a lot in each episode i thought I was way further in than that.

I'm a straight guy and I like Glee. I like musicals and hope that once my voice changes enough on T I can continue to act in musicals in male roles. I've acted female roles, which makes my mom wonder why a trans guy would act girl parts, but it was before I'd accepted being trans and you work with what you've got.

That's awesome! I'm sure it will. I'm trying to get back into school and want to take some theater classes, especially to do male roles. I did drama in middle school, but quit when I hit high school. Partially for sports and also because I was becoming more and more socially awkward as I realized I was interested in girls and really bad at being girly.

Anyways! I'm glad more guys are showing their Glee love :) I mean, hell, Darren Criss (Blaine) is straight. He grew up around theater and he says he actually had to come out as straight, which I found hilariously awesome.

i read a post on this site about transphobia in glee mostly in the rocky horror episode matt the Asian guy not being willing to play a trans person there elimination of gagas shout out to lgbt people in born this way and some other stuff i forgot. also one of the producers is transphobic and has portrayed MTFs in a negative way in other shows he has worked on.

^Ryan Murphy, I just read about him after you brought this up. He also wrote Nip/Tuck, ugh. And he happens to be gay.

Hmmm I don't doubt it I just find it odd. I liked Nip/Tuck and there was a lot of trans work in there.

I haven't watched the show, but I read that some of that 'trans work' involved a mentally unstable gay man who decides to become a woman because he falls in love with a straight doctor, and that docter uses a lot of reconstructive surgery to make this gay man a "perfect woman". The transsexual "woman" then runs away from said docter after marrying him because he treated her like an admired creation, and in her new life, she sleeps with teenagers and sexually abuses her adopted son.

Besides the transphobia, though.... why do people think the singing is good??? Please, educate me. Honestly. My family has to mute the TV every time they start singing. I think the humor is great, but ouch. My ears. I do not appreciate the slaughter of perfectly good songs. And I'm astonished Rachel is supposed to have the best voice, hers is my least favourite of the bunch. It has a very whiny tone.

Dominick_81 - it says you like Jenna Leigh Green below your avatar - have you seen her in any plays? I saw her in Wicked when she was on the tour as Nessarose.

I haven't seen her in any plays... yet. I hope to someday. I love her! Your so lucky you've seen her in wicked. I wish I could have seen her in that. I have a wicked bootleg of her playing Nessa. She's great! I wish there was a dvd out there of her playing Elphaba.  Did you get the chance to meet her?

No, I didn't get the chance to meet her. I waited by the stage door but she didn't come out.

Sometimes I worry that the fact that I'm obsessed with musicals will make it hard for me to get a girl. I worry that everyone will just assume I'm into guys.

Sometimes it takes a while for them to come out. I saw Cyndi Lauper in the Threepenny opera. She was the last person to come out. Unfortunately I didn't get to meet her that time. She took pics and signed for some fans but had to take off to go to Broadway bares.

I know what you mean. I'm afraid people are gunna think I'm into guys too b/c I like theatre.
