Joan is not one for stereotypes.

By her own admission she struggles to define her own identity. She could be described as a cross-dresser. She could also be described as androgynous,
because she lives between the gender roles.

She's also the reluctant poster girl of south Cumbria's transgender community, but having established the monthly Trans Lakes Nights, a social group for transgender individuals, she's willing to accept a certain amount of exposure to promote the group and to show people "we're not a threat".

I read Joan's story and I support her efforts. Sometimes we don't choose to be a pioneer or activist or trailblazer. It just happens that way. I'm out in public quite a bit and I love it. I wanted to be out there bcause you never know if there is someone out there who may need encouragement and a genntle nudge. I'm aware that things could happen but it doesn't stop me from being myself. I applaud Joan and your efforts. I wish her much success.
