Title: Books written from the parents' POV?
Post by: tvc15 on May 19, 2011, 10:08:48 PM
When I came out, my mom took the news harder than anyone else I know, but now she's coming around. She told me she was reading Chaz Bono's book (which I'm a bit leery about--I don't know anything about this guy, so I don't know if she'll get the right impression about FTMs, or what) but she said she'd rather learn about this from Cher's point of view.

Are there any books out there written by the parent(s) of a transgender child? I can see why that'd be more helpful/comforting to her. I'm really drawing blanks here.

I don't know of any books to suggest, but skylarkeleven on youtube did a few videos with his mom, doing Q & A.  (You can find these by searching his name and "q&a")  His mom also had an email address that she used to respond to questions and such from parents of trans kids.  I don't know if she still does that, but it might be worth looking into.

Funny you should suggest that. I actually showed her those videos right after he posted them on Youtube. She watched the Q&A on her own time, then told me she didn't enjoy it because his mom never really mentioned having any sad/bad feelings. For that reason it was hard for my mom to relate to anything she said. I guess she's grieving and needs to hear from other parents who had a hard time coming to terms with it.

Darn.  I'm sorry.  Have you tried online resources like PFLAG's website?  There are also some books about transgender children, aimed at parents, that can be found on Amazon through a Google search.
