Title: T and baldness?
Post by: Cody Jensen on May 20, 2011, 12:28:27 AM
Do you have to worry about both of your parents or just your mother's side (for baldness while on T)? I am sure no one from my mom's side of the family is bald but my father's side I'm not so sure about.

I've heard it was both, but I'm not sure. With my family my dad's side has got the thin hair, my mums side has really thick. I have really thick hair and being on T, didn't have any thinning. None of the men in my family on either side have receding hair lines and that is something I got, but not really bad. So it's all about you in the end I guess.

Balding is genetic and is carried by the X chromosome. Unfortunately, we have two of those so balding is much more likely amongst trans men.

I'm going bald and I cry as I have long hair and like it. I will not change my progress toward normality for hair.

im not on T yet but i already have thinning patches. i have had really thick hair as far as i can remember, I once had it down my back until i convinced my mom to cut it. that was when i was 9, now its no more then a little above sholder. my dad has maybe 25-30 hairs left in one spot and he flips them over. its so funny to me becouse i still remember when he had some hair. but his is nearly gone on top. I know the day is coming when my hair will receide or fall out all together but im more worried about how my gf will take it. she is a um... hair puller ;) and dosent want me to cut it short. she keeps insisting that i keep it kinda long. but i hate the day that i have to tell her that i need to do this becouse i know it will be a very black day. we have been argueing this since i came out to everyone. now that every one knows it seems kinda stupid not to. but im serching for a job and that is hard enough. im ramblin. umm yeah so i know my hairs gonna just disapear someday  becouse my moms hair is thin as paper .

I'm not on T yet, so all of my speculations on results are strictly based on family genes. My family has a history of males balding at an old/ semi old age (my dad is almost 50 and it's getting thin, but still plenty there! So I'm not worried.

From everything I've heard, it can come from both sides.

In my case, both sides of my family are good in that respect. Neither my dad's side or my mom's side have any balding people.

Never saw pics of my dad, but my half brother is in his 40s and balding, and my hairline's already receeding and I'm almost 21.

I love my hair, but I'd rather be bald than give up T.  Completely agree with Mr. Rainey.

My mom's side has great hair.  My dad's side..not so much.  He and his brothers are all balding.  After 17 months on T, my hairline is definitely in a male pattern but not exactly receding.  I still have a few "baby hairs" along my hairline, so I'm not worried at the present.  When/if I do go bald, it'll be okay.  I'll learn to deal with it.  And it might actually be a good thing!  Maybe then I'll start looking my age haha

Both sides.  It's the X chromosome that carries baldness.  Since cis men get only the X from their mother they only have to look at their mother's side.  But trans men have an X from their mother and an X from their father.
