Title: Criminal Minds : dual personality killer
Post by: Del on May 26, 2011, 10:11:32 PM
Tonight I watched a segment of Criminal Minds. There was a young man with a dual personality. The male personality was weak but the female one he called Amanda was strong. The female one eventually took over in the end.

I know that this is just more television foolishness but it did make me wonder about some things.

Does this type of television foolishness anger you ladies and gentlemen?
Do you even believe that there is any truth to any of it?

Just curious as with my limited knowledge of transgender lives and such I can only think this would anger me. After all, it does make transgenders look sorta crazy and evil from a straight uninformed view.

I didn't mean any offense. Just wondering.

Laura,
I reckon that you handle it better than I handle those who have made non-denominational preachers greedy, lost, foolish, lazy, uneducated and a joke in general.
People like David Koresh and the multitude of televangelists have made those of us who are real nothing more than someone to make fun of.
I'm glad you can shrug it off.

I get tired of shows that knock transgendered people... We've become the new easy target because they can't get away with knocking other cultures and races so easily any more... Folks are always looking for someone to knock down and all it really equates to is insecurity, bigotry and hatred for anyone deemed to be different

Everyone, male or female has their strengths and weaknesses... I often think that the folks that make these shows and create the fictional characters they create do so because they are uneducated about trans people, insensitive and wrestling with their own internal fears and issues

Then again, maybe they're simply trying to up their ratings with sensationalism and using trans people for their scape goat

There are people who do have dual and/or split personalities, that however has nothing to do with being transgendered

They recently did a show about a Branch Davidian type of ministry with the leader being a kook that was willing to let everyone die because he thought he was God.

I found that offensive as there are still a handful of us that are not welcome in most denominational churches because we have chosen not to let denominations limit the word of God unto us. We are repaid by people by being either, perverted, a joke or some abomination that is lost.

In these things I know how you all feel to an extent.

That sounds like a spiritual issue

I've not watched Criminal Minds since Mandy Pantinkin left, and even then I didn't watch that often, so I haven't seen the episode in question.  From the brief synopses you gave, it's my opinion that the main theme is one of DID / MPD issues and not necessarily any real focus on Transgengerism.  The fact that the alter at the end is female might possibly push it in that direction as a final point, but I doubt it.

I've always been curious about DID issues since reading Sybil and When Rabbit Howls in early college, so I'd actually be more interested in how that was treated as the main plot point.
