Title: hiding being on T?
Post by: icontact on May 28, 2011, 03:36:36 PM
sup dudes! most of you don't know me, but i'm sam. i haven't been online for a while because the whole trans thing became pretty back-burner after transition. but lately i've been feeling more ugh about my curves and realizing that i won't pass forever, so i'm looking into actually getting on T. so here's the situation.

i am most likely going to pennsylvania in the fall for university and due to my extremely homophobic father who condemns my transition, i don't really plan on coming back, no matter what it takes. i want to start T as soon as possible, and if i can scrape up the money, i don't imagine it will be very difficult to get a letter and prescription since i'm post-transition. however, i want to time it right in case i am forced to come home. for those of you on T, is it even possible to hide the fact that you've been on T? if it is, how much of a grace period do you have? one month? three? not even? i am considering just beginning on a low dose to slow changes but really, any information would be great.

Well the biggest thing (and first to show) is probably the voice. I've been she'd with my man voice though by people who knew me before.

Second is the hair, which you can simply shave so that's simple.

If it's any encouragement, I have been on T for eight months and I can still hit my old pitch (though it does feel rather strange. Talking that way would definitely require practice.)

Best of luck!

Voice is a non-issue for me; I've been full-time for years and my voice is naturally low. My father's and grandfather-on-my-mom's-side voices were not low at all for a male, so I do not expect much change. I'm more wondering about say, facial changes? obviously, you can't hide facial hair if you're generating a substantial amount, unless you plan to shave like twice a day. but from what i've heard, most of the facial hair you get within the first year is mostly peach fuzz ie very hideable?

Probably not noticeable enough to "out" you. If you're trying to pass, they help, but if you're trying to look female I think the change would have to be pretty drastic.

But it's all speculation because different people get different results.

so true. alas. god, lately i have just been so frustrated about my body. i'm a dancer and half the costumes for any male dancers require shirtless or a really tight shirt. i've been getting away with hip-hop because they never ask you to wear anything like that but i want to explore other types of dance so badly and i can't because of this stupid body and it makes me so mad because i'm good and i don't get to show people that. and at the prices top surgery is running, probably by the time i even have it, i'll be too old to get into the dance industry. OR i'll have to bust my butt living at poverty level to save the money. hrggggggdklsjfld. this is so OT....

That's unfortunate. I hope you can find a way to raise money for top surgery; I dread having to come up with the money as well.
