Storm Stocker's parents have raised a storm of controversy over the real importance of gender stereotyping of human individuals from birth. Scholars of gender and gender issues have often argued that gender role and identity stereotyping limits the individual's choice and opportunities for self-expression in life. The limitation has been most emphasized in girls whose lives seem to be boxed into a corner by restrictive gender role ascription of mostly patriarchal cultures.

In more recent times, however, individuals who have challenged traditional ideas of gender in androgynous self-comportment have come to public notice. The 19 year-old Serbian-born catwalk star, Andrej Pejic, whose androgynous image was censored by two major U.S. retailers who did not want customers to "confuse him for a woman," presents a very recent example of the challenge to sex and gender identity stereotypes of traditional culture.
