Loren Cannon made a name for herself as one of the top female amateur triathletes in California in her age group. On Sunday, Cannon, a philosophy professor at Humboldt State University, will compete in the grueling Escape From Alcatraz race - as a man.
Cannon, who is 47 and began transitioning from female to male at age 41, has changed his body's physiology through hormones and surgery. His voice dropped. He gained 15 pounds. He changed his birth certificate. He is married to a woman.
What hasn't changed is his love of athletics.
