NANCY, France — Two women succeeded in dodging France's same-sex marriage ban to say "I do" on Saturday -- because one of the happy couple is still, legally, a man.

Stephanie Nicot, 59, wed 27-year-old partner Elise in a town hall ceremony in Nancy in eastern France in what is said to be the first marriage of its kind in the country.

Stephanie, formerly Stephane, had sex reassignment surgery to become a woman but has refused to lodge documents, as required by French law, to also have her gender changed on the population register.

so, documents are not changed.  Strictly speaking then, this was NOT a same-sex marriage.  Instead it is a continuation of the same sort of media-whoring about taking advantage of loopholes that we have seen since Littleton and possibly even before then...and that was 12 years ago.

I have decided not to change my documents when I am finished because I am do not want to have to go through legal gymnastics to have my marriage recognised.

I have already had people in positons of power in my life question the validity of my marriage. Granted I could squish them in court if they made an issue for me but as it stands I just say 'I am still legaly a man' and that phrase has shut down any conversations that have looked like they were going in the direction of my marriage being questioned.

yes I am exercising 'male privilage'
nope no shame at all

Well this was always going to happen in places where same sex marriages aren't allowed. Good for them. Merely shows how stupid the law is.
