Title: Names
Post by: spiffyalexneal on June 07, 2011, 09:48:17 AM
So just curious. Why did you guys choose your name? Did it have anything to do with your birth name? Did you want to get as far away from your birth name as possible, or did you keep it similar (same initial, etc)?

I just like it. I think it's the kind of fun, playful name that suits me.

i picked jesse because it just grabbed me. Nothing special or any connotation to anything, but when i decided to tag myself as such, it just felt right. I decided to keep my first name (my legal one) as my middle name because i am attatched to it, and its a unisex name.

I still don't think the people who harass me now will find me when it's all said & done.

I chose the name Cole because it's close to my birth name (Caroline) and I chose my middle name (Derby) because it's a family name.

My middle name was Leigh.  I'll give my parents input when I speak to them, so Lee may end up as a middle name.

My mother has told me before that if I was born male, she would have named me Devin Scott.  I figure that it would have been my name if everything had gone the right way from the beginning, so that's the name I'm taking now.

I had quite a bit of trouble deciding on a name myself.
When I first started the search I tried to find something that began with "S" like my birth name.
But none of the names I found really clicked so I ended up dropping that plan, thank god for google  :P
I actually stumbled across the name I chose while looking up baby names, I loved the sound of it and it seemed to just fit.
Took me a good month or so to find one tho  ::)

I really didn't want anything that sounded like my given name.  I've actually never gone by that name though, I always had a nickname.  When I was about 11 I thought I might like to be called Brendan, which starts with the same letter as my old nickname, but eventually I decided I didn't want anything that reminded me of that either.  But I still liked the idea of having a long 'real' name and a shorter more casual sounding name, so from there it was just a matter of finding one I liked... which I did.

Mine came via a dream where I was introduced as Karen. I had never considered it up until then.
Karen.

I am still deciding on mine. I was born Christie Lynn and named after Christ, no joke. My Dad's name is William but I am leaning towards using that as one of my names. I will keep my last name because I am the last person with it in the family. And if anyone has suggestions I'd appreciate it. I was going ot go with Bradyn but it is close to Lynn

Mine has the same initial as my old nickname (Milly), which was the only name I went by. I just kinda picked mine after I called myself that in my head for a while, it feels natural for whatever reason. I like my male name because I feel like it's a somewhat more masculine take on what I do like about my old name: it's kinda playful, not too serious, and not super macho or super feminine in how it sounds. And this way, people will still spell it wrong. lol

I wanted to be named after a Ninja Turtle :'P. I'm dead serious XP. So yeah, going with Raphael xD. It's also easy to pronounce, even for the family members with the thickest Mexican accents. Well, assuming they chose to even refer to me by that name XP. For my middle name, Link @_@. I don't legally have one, so my explanation to people when they ask about my weird middle name will be "my parents made the mistake of not giving me a middle name, so I chose my own" >:'D.

I could have shortened my name to a male version but I wanted something different. I was bullied using the shortened name at school so I didn't want to be reminded of that every time I heard my name. I just went with what my parents would have called me had I been born male.

Bugger me, I can't believe you were ever 'Sophia' That's actually blown my mind :o

Anyway, I'm still figuring myself out but I'm pretty sure I'd like to go by a male name in the near future (If I have the guts to tell people) I have a list of boy names that I look over most nights and add any I've come across that I like or make other combinations of names  :embarrassed:

I like the idea of a first and middle name maybe because I wasn't given a middle name or just because I like combinations of names, who knows.

some ideas I have: Michael/ Sebastien/Ryan/ Danny/Erik/Lucas there are many many more  :embarrassed:

Mikhail, becuase I had a great grandfather who was an amazing man who saved many people only to be killed for saving them.
But people  (Americans can not make the correct soundof kh, its like loch in Scottish, but more roll, more throaty. It winds up sounding like Mik Hale, so I go by Mike, although Russians call me Misha, the official dimminuation of Mikhail).

Whenever I see any name that ends in -ayden , I think transman.  Look at all the Braydens, Caydens Kaidens. Haydens, Aydens in the transworld. Dead give away.

I am almost 50, I live in a small western desert town with no gay resources or visible alternative peoples, and hate crimes against gays and trans people are mere misdeamenors, like watering your lawn during this drought.  Its a shame, but that's just the way it is. So I present myself as a traditional man.

I changed my name long before hormones, but I always dressed and acted and passed as a man. I kept my last name (which my father anglicized, thank God or it wouldn't fit across an Army uniform or be pronounced correctly by anyone) but I altered my middle name slightly.. my parents had already given me a male middle name, it was to be my first name, and we do not do middle names in my family's culture, but I was born ambiguous.

Well, there's the obvious suggestion of Christopher, as it's got essentially the same derivation.  Some Christophers go by "Topher," so that's an option if you want something that isn't as gender-neutral as "Chris" for a nickname.  Or you could go Latin with "Jesus."  :)

Lynn is a unisex name (well, maybe only if you're British) so you could hold onto that one.  Or maybe alter it to something more masc, like "Lane?"

One thing about "y's" - it's become very trendy lately to give girls "traditional" names but jazz them up with funky spellings involving the letter "y" - Catelyn, Madelyn, etc.  So you might want to avoid that if you don't want your name to be seen as a "girl name."

It took me awhile, the first one that I used was Robbie, it was just something I came up with quickly so that my gf could tell guys she was datin. It always felt weird tho, see my dads name is Robert he goes by bob but it was still weird, then I started looking through baby books and went through the whole guy section and i had about 12 names that I was considering. I was really into Bam Margera at the time and his name is Brandon, Im nothin like Bam but i liked the name. I chose James becouse it sounded good together. Ive considered changing my last name but I figure that if i was born male I wouldnt have gotten to choose that. So its Brandon James Pearl, flows but adding Pearl at the end still gives it a girly feel.

Kal Tyler.

I actually have two I go by, one for normal use, Frank, and another which I'd like to keep private, since it's more for business purposes. I'm just a very quirky individual when it comes to personal information.  :-\ Probably a side effect of being trans ya know? Anyway, Frank is the name of my favourite guitarist and I just happened to start using it one day and haven't stopped since. I got a lecture out of my grandfather about using famous people's names and being associated with them if they do something really bad but I don't really care. The man could probably kill someone and I'd think he was still an angel. lol.

I asked my SO what letter suited me. She said "S" and so I looked up "S" names and found what I liked. As for my middle name, I just masculinized it and made it easy for myself.

My bestfriend thought I was just going to go by Sam, the shortening of my name, but I've been called Sam for years and it just didn't feel right.  I spent a while going through baby names and sadly enough while reading a fanfiction one day I came across the name Kieran. I did a little research on it and found I liked it spelled better Keiran. I was introducing it to my friend on line, one of two people I was out to at the time, and the name immediately took. He has been calling me Kei ever since. For a while I kept thinking I would continue looking at names before I settled down, so I knew for sure, but that never happened. So despite its mispronunciations I think Keiran is here to stay.

Growing up I was always changing my name. I hated my first name, and it didn't help that nobody could pronounce it, along with my last name. I went through around 10 different names before I finally decided on Jacob. Why? Because of all the nicknames that can be derived from it. It's like having one legal name but never having to settle down with it. You see I got a lot of personalities and they are really opposite of each other, so I need names that suit them, names that won't make feel foreign in that personality. No I don't have DID. Anyways, because of having such crazy opposite personalities that take on a life of their own and may even seem like I have DID to others, the name I chose needed to be flexible. My first name change I chose Parker (this was a legal name change) and it was stupid because although the main 'me' loved it, the other me's hated it. So finally after a long battle and a year with the name I found something I think all my personalities can agree on. I also have three middle names which are great because I feel like I can use them and legally it makes sense.

So in the end, this is reason is why I chose Jacob. I also like it because it's really far away from my birth name.

I was born Jessica Maria. Already called Jesse, so just going with that. Not a 100% sure. Open to suggestions.

My family's always called me Nick or Nicky for short, and it's never bothered me. I initially wanted to change my middle name to "Lucas", out of respect for my best friend and (dorkily enough) because of one of my absolute favorite characters ever.  Buuuut, me and said best friend started dating. So, that seems kind of...odd. I'll figure something out eventually.

I always wanted a name that was different. I tried out different names but none of them seem to fit or stick with me.  But after I saw "Kindergarten cop" (back when it came out) the name Dominick just stuck with me and I wanted to have that name ever since then.

It has nothing to do with my birth name or fried chicken.

I made a list of names. My better half and a few friends all picked the same one from the list. Done.

I took a systematic route.

I draw up a long list of names I liked. Then I thought about how each of them sounded with my surname; if they were of the right era for my age; if I was comfortable with what they might indicate about my class, race and background; if they could be shortened to form a nickname - and if I liked those nicknames, and what my initials would be.

That all narrowed it down quite significantly. I picked the one I liked the best from the three that were left over. Then I asked my very good friend if she liked it and thought it suited me, and went for it knowing I could always change again (and also to give it time because they grow on you with use).
