I'm sure we all have a fear or two to share. I would like to see if anyone is willing to share there's?
Mine has to be bees and spiders. If a spider is in my room, I'll eek. If a bee is in my room, I'll bounce away. My room is pretty tiny & bees have been known to like stinging me. – It's funny how I'm not fazed by wasps though xD
Lol, funny you should start this thread, I was just thinking about this very thing. Bees and wasps are my phobias. I could pet spiders all day, and snuggle up to snakes, whatever else. But put me in a room with a bee or a wasp in it and one of two things will happen: I'll either run out like my hair is on fire (possibly screaming like a child depending on the size) OR sit there paralyzed, mentally shouting at the buzzy little critter not to come anywhere near me.
Needles ... I just can't seem to give myself a shot --- I can only imagine what it's going to be like to start T. I currently take insulin and the needles are tiny & I still can't do it.
Sephirah, you don't let spiders come in and out of your house as they see fit do you? Please tell me you at least catch them and put them outside, ha.
Rob, i'm not such a big fan of needles myself. Just the other day i had to be numbed up at the dentist. While he we sticking needles into my gums i had my fist clenched and i needed to keep reminding myself i can't hit him >.<.
I don't like clowns or balloons. I have only been to the circus once (the first clown I saw was one to many) and I have never taken my 2 daughters. My Mom knows about this so she takes them to the circus for me :embarrassed: . I can blow up balloons for a kids party (now, after 16 years) but I can feel be pulse racing as I do it.
Bees. I was stung by a bee when I was ten years old. Severe allergy to their stings. I've successfully avoided them for the last 23 years. I'm good with most spiders. I take the majority of them outside if I find them in my house, although I killed a young female black widow that was in my sink last year. I didn't want to try catching that one & make a mistake.
riding escalators? They don't seem scary, but I can not get on one when it is running.
Needles, for me. I can get a shot and be reasonably fine, but I can't look at the needle while it's happening. I can't watch anyone else getting one either.
I'm not very afraid of most bugs, but I'm terrified of cockroaches for some reason. I've seen spiders too big to catch in a coffee cup and just said "Huh, that's a pretty big one", but one little roach on the floor will send me across the room screaming...
water! will not swim in the ocean, river, or pool, just a whirlpool. thank you

Needles, heights, and spiders
Though oddly enough my fear of heights seems to have gotten better fairly recently.

My mother is terrified of balloons, and I always thought that she was the only one. The things you learn. ::)
I had a fear of needles for years but one day I realized they didn't really bother me much anymore
I had a pretty bad reaction the last time I got a bee sting so there is a degree of fear there... Otherwise I think bees are cute :)
My fear of spiders is limited to a select few spiders because their bites are dangerously toxic
Heights.
Needles are easy. I work in a lab and occasionally have to bleed myself as a 'normal' control. Always make me laugh. People have fainted watching me
Remember if you have a bad reaction to a bee or wasp sting see you Dr, you can get a really bad, life threatening response to future ones and my need to carry an adrenalin shot with you. Believe it or not more people die in Australia from bee stings than shark attacks. And we have lots of sharks.

Sorry this has happened recently.

I have a fear of bees, wasps and heights. Another fear I have is going up escalators, i'm fine going down but going up I always feel like I could fall backwards.
Ah, Nathan's 'fall backwards' comment made me remember another one.
I am not normally afraid of heights. For whatever reason though, if there's an edge or a railing, I feel like I'll fall over if my back faces it. So whenever there's a potential drop-off, I can always be found either well away from it, or looking at it at least peripherally.
Nature's corkscrews of death - well, tornadoes and maelstroms and the like.
And fast spiders.
And drunk white English-speaking men in baseball caps.

Me too, I never know what to tell people, I am not afraid of heights per se, I feel like I have more control if I am far away from the railing or at least facing it.
Also a hate feeling abandoned, like if I am talking to someone and walking with them in the grocery store for example, and they fall back where I can't see them, there is always this tinge of fear. I have mostly conquered this one. I still have to keep glancing at people I can't see to make sure they are still walking with me though.
and of course spiders and, bees scare me, cops scare me too, they are just so intimidating.
Dead bodies scare me more than anything. I can't go to funerals and constantly fear that something will happen and I will be the person to first discover that a person has died.
I am also terrified of heights, and despite not actually being scared of blood I physically react like someone with a severe aversion to blood (faint, dizziness, nausea at the sight of blood).
UFO's :) when I was a little girl I always feel fear when I lied on the bed alone in the dark room, becouse I saw a lot of films and newspaper posts about UFO's and I always tought: tonight they are come for me :)
Needles and incisions. I have full on needle phobia, BP drop the lot. Same with watching a surgical incision through the skin. Blood itself doesn't bother me, and I can watch video of an operation once they have finished the initial incision. Very strange combination.
Snakes and spiders don't worry me. My house often has infestations of very dead, very flat spiders.
And snakes are safe unless they are close to, or in the house. Then they get to meet the snake collector, or my long handled shovel!
Karen.
PS - anyone want any Redback Spiders, going cheap!!
I have the fear of needles and spiders.
I have two.
1. Spiders. I can't get within 10 feet of one without flipping out and hyperventilating. Just thinking about them gives me the willies.
2. Drowning in an enclosed space. I don't fear drowning at any other time, but if I'm over water in a car or in an airplane, I get really nervous and start thinking horrible thoughts related to falling into the water.

I get the same way if I'm in a car thats crossing a bridge over water. I have thoughts of the bridge falling or the car messing up and steering into the water. I had a dream that happened.

Same. It was one of the scariest dreams ever. I just can't shake this fear even though it's relatively irrational.
Pod people. Torture. Paralysis. Losing my freedom. And that dead lady from the Shining who came out of the bathroom. Eww.
The clown from 'It' ( I swear I see that thing in my closet at night) and attics. I am seriously terrified of attics.

We're strange animals. I love attics. I broke my foot putting insulation in one once and that sucked, but for the most part they seem to me safe and cozy and good.

My number one, I think, is low ceilings and high bunk beds and the like. I've got claustrophobia of the head. I can't even lie down with my head touching a wall. Being in small cars can give me panic attacks.
Other than that, I'm afraid of crossing bridges (especially in cars), falling (but not heights ::) ), numbness and loss of sensation, and I've got a good bit of social anxiety. I'm sure I'll think of more and come back to this thread. :P
Now there is a knowing: "Your very worst fears will come true..."
There are obvious reasons for that, because we constantly are busy with this stuff, thinking about it, trying to run away from it, etc.
So what are my fears? ...
(BTW if you verbalize it often enough it also becomes more real, every time you go over the stuff.)
I'd have to think hard of some 'benign' fear to bring up, to mention --- the less benign one?
Winding up as a bag-woman, and not exactly enjoying this new found 'freedom'...

I'm not necessarily afraid of needles, but when I had my surgery the nurse who was taking blood came in at the same time as the nurse who was putting in my IV. With people poking around in both my arms, I just about started crying.

We all float down here.
Deep water... If I can't see the bottom, I am not going in it. I also have this paralyzing fear that I'll wake up someday and my son won't. I guess its because when I was a kid I saw a documentary on SIDS, and the thought that my baby could just up and die on his own scares me to tears some nights. I get up and check on him at least once a night, just in case.
Spiders generally don't bug me. If I move something and poof there's a spider there, then yeah, I'll eep, but if it's just chillin on a wall 'honey badger don't care' :P

Couldn't you keep the baby in your bed? That way you'd always know. Mine had severe sleep apnea, and after a day or two the doctor's office told me to just try keeping her with me, and it made a world of difference.
I'm terrified of sharks, I don't even dip my toes in at the beach :( I watched jaws when I was three while being baby sat, my fear of sharks also prevents me from swimming in pools or being in spas at night - even if it's well lit :( and even though sharks don't use spas or pools
And hopefully I don't offend anyone, but I'm scared of amputees, I'm terrified of becoming one, and I'm scared of projectiles, so things that could flick up in my face, I don't go near, and I don't use lawn mowers or power tools :/
I have this weird thing where I can't sleep on my back with my head to the side incase someone comes into my room and deliberately kneels on it (my head) or accidentally sits on it - causing my neck to snap.
Oh the shame :'(
I have tocophobia, and have since I was a kid. Just. . . ick.

It's only a phobia if it's an irrational fear, hon.
Considering what you're dealing with, I don't think it's irrational at all, I think it's perfectly reasonable. *hug*

When my son was a baby, I constantly checked to see make sure he was still breathing. He got so still when he slept and no one knows what causes SIDS. It was anxiety provoking.
I'm afraid of drugs, yelling, powerlessness, being rejected, and confusion.

Fear increases levels of adrenaline. Some people thrive on this (adrenaline-junkies), and actively seek out scary or exhilarating situations which pump adrenaline through their system. It makes them feel alive, heightened senses etc. Not surprising since its main evolutionary purpose is to facilitate the "fight or flight" response when faced with very real danger.

What I've read is that depressives use them to feel something, anxious/phobic people use them for inoculation, inexperienced people use them for exploration of life and emotions, and thrill-seeking types watch them because they have stunted dopamine regulation abilities. That's just what I've read, though. I don't like to watch them either, usually.

I guess it depends how immersive an experience it is. If a movie is done well, it can be terrifying to folks because it either succeeds in making the viewer suspend awareness of their surroundings and put themselves in that situation, or believe that the content is actually real, such as movies like Paranormal Activity or The Blair Witch Project. They play on primal fears that a lot of people have, such as being afraid of the dark, claustrophobia, or that there's a monster in the closet. And even if the movies themselves aren't inherently scary, if an association is formed with a fear the individual themselves already has, that can often be enough.

I have by the way I have walked out of a movie because I was too frightened to watch any more.

Then again I did do rock climbing because of the adrenaline rush. I also loved free fighting karate for essentially the same reason, the rush. But watching a movie just seems odd. Nothing wrong in it. But like most things we or I don't understand I just want to ask the question. I sometimes wonder if people put themselves into dangerous situations because of the adrenaline rush. I think guys do, I think woman (generally) don't. Not meant as a sexist comment more of a difference between the sexes. I was thinking of dangerous social situations in this respect.

When the 1979 scifi horror film
Alien opened, I went to see it in a theater in Pasadena, CA. The place was packed for the opening weekend matinee.
A couple of rows in front of me were several obnoxious young boys, aged circa 10-11. They were loud and laughing, until the scene when the alien larva pops out of John Hurt's chest. One of the little boys was so frightened, he ran up the aisle screaming.
We all had a good laugh about that.
Jamie,
I remember seeing the Exorcist at Uni, I looked at one time and the three boys I was with were all looking at the floor. It was one of the first times that I really loved being a girl, I asked my boyfriend to cuddle me and I told him I was frightened, he was so happy.
I had a problem with split pea soup for years afterward...

Many years ago, in the United States, there was television series that purported to re-enact "true" stories of the odd, unexplained, and mysterious. It was called "One Step Beyond."
I think there are some YouTube videos of a few episodes out there.
I've always been scared of the dark, but it freaked me out when I used to turn the light on, reason being? SCARY THINGS CAN FIND YOU EASIER WITH THE LIGHT ON. These days I need a movie on to sleep lol (not scary! Usually a car movie f&f etc)
