Argentine leader proudly delivers new identity cards to transsexuals, saying equality matters

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Argentina's president personally delivered the nation's first identity cards on Monday to people who legally switched their genders under a law that sets a global precedent.

President Cristina Fernandez said she's proud of setting a new global standard with the gender identity law, which overwhelmingly passed congress, enabling anyone to change their gender without first having to win approval from judges or doctors.

At a ceremony in the Government House on Monday, President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner handed over the first DNI identity cards issued to members of the transsexual and ->-bleeped-<- communities....

"Whoever opposed this initiative has not caught up with the times," she said, and apologized to the audience, mainly composed of members of the transgender community, "for taking so long to do this."
