The only reason conservatives push for the old definition of marriage "between one man and one woman" is that they want to revert to a time when wives were considered property owned by the man. A time before women were allowed to vote and had rights over their own bodies.
In ancient times, early unions were often arranged to cement political alliances, secure wealth, or clarify bloodlines for inheritance, particularly of lands, wealth, and noble titles.
Given the current push by the GOP to bring about White Christian Nationalism, it is clear that this is just another part of the same agenda.
