The biennial convention of the Texas Republican Party convened last month, resulting in the release of a new official platform that includes a host of anti-LGBTQ+ provisions, including a ban on trans teachers and the characterization of homosexuality as "an abnormal lifestyle choice."
Texas already implements some of the most oppressive anti-trans policies in the country. Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) has made his crusade against trans rights a centerpiece of both his tenure as attorney general and his campaign for the Senate. The Movement Advancement Project gives the state a score of -6.75/49 on overall LGBTQ policy. But it seems the party is still not satisfied.
Early on in the over 100-page document, the party declares it wants legal penalties for Texas corporations that "lead or participate in boycotts against Texas due to legislative action to protect the rights of Texans to... compete in sports with only those of their own biological gender, or to protect children and juveniles against sexual organ mutilation, hormones, and puberty blockers designed to fake transition from one gender to another."
In its education section, the party emphasizes its support of so-called parents' rights, a conservative dog whistle for the push to ban LGBTQ+ curricula and LGBTQ+ protections in schools. The party claims its anti-LGBTQ+ policies are about "prohibiting the grooming of minors" and states its support for a law "even more comprehensive than the Florida [Don't Say Gay] law that prohibits instruction in sexual orientation and gender identity ideology in government schools and libraries."
