Gay Republican group abandons transgender people, calling decision a return to 'moral' clarity

Jacob Ogles (21 Aug 2026)

The Log Cabin Republicans officially abandoned the transgender community, pulling the ladder of progress and support that benefited its members up behind themselves.

Ross Hemminger, president of the nation's most prominent gay Republican organization, announced that Log Cabin had reversed a decision from 2015 to include transgender rights in its mission statement.

In an op-ed published by Townhall, he wrote that the board of directors had voted to instead "concentrate specifically on issues of sexual orientation and conservative values — in other words, we are an LGB advocacy organization, as our founders envisioned and as our moral center calls us to be."

The group's website now identifies it as "America's oldest and largest organization for LGB conservatives and our straight allies."

Hemminger wrote in the op-ed that the issues now dominating conversations about trans rights, particularly regarding trans youth, prompted the change. While the group said a decade ago that all adults should be free to pursue happiness "free of government interference," extending that principle to transgender young people is apparently no longer a priority.

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

That will happen too. Corruption always eats itself. Then, it starts all over again.

This statement in the article has me scratching my head: ..."concentrate specifically on issues of sexual orientation and conservative values..."

My opinion is that most "conservative values" people that I know, do not in any way, shape, manner or form embrace gay, lesbian or bisexual people. Most of them are rather judgemental. At best they will show tolerance with the line that it's none of their business of what other adults do in the bedrooms. That is tolerance at best and not part of their conservative values. Yikes.

I just get the feeling that some of the older LGB folks don't have the energy to continue another round of fighting narrow minded bigots. So it's easier to feed the bigots the trans community as a peace sacrifice offering.

I am gender fluid but live primarily in male mode. My wife knows about my gender identity struggles and we are navigating how to come out and be more public about me being trans.

Well, screw anyone who thinks like that. I'm not going down without a fight, and I mean that. Besides, are these people so stupid that they think that they will be exempt? Hell no. Once we go, they are next. Selfish, ignorant dullards, yo.

Yes it's a very short sighted way to deal with this situation. But I'm thinking that some of the LGB community think they can appease the bigots by sacrificing the trans community. It's a bit of a "pick me" mindset.

I do think that a lot of animosity is being driven by the current political climate and leadership. It can definitely improve if a mature professional was leading those political discussions instead of weaponizing the topic.

I remember when I went to a local LGBT group a long time ago. At the time, I was the first trans person who had ever been there, and they had existed for a decade at that point.

ENDA was the hot topic of conversation around that time. But I will never forget when one chick said: "The Gs and the Ls need their rights first and the Ts can wait." I was biting my tongue so hard, I'm surprised that I wasn't bleeding. But I felt that since I had never been around these people before, it was best to keep my mouth shut. Had that scenario happened now... well...something might've happened. Ya understand, rubber band?
