Hi Everyone,

Looking for your thoughts and experiences. I'm going through the process of finding a Gender Therapist/Endocrinologist and have been experiencing negative thoughts because of the "FUD" (fear, uncertainty, doubt) associated with traveling the world in 2years and not being able to continue HRT.

I've researched and have found certain countries consider Transgender folks illegal... I'm thinking about the issues associated with blood tests, refilling HRT scrips, etc. while in certain parts of the world.

Any advice or experiences are welcomed. Thanks for your input! ( ◠‿◠ )

Hi, Shania!

Welcome to Susan's Place.

Sorry, I have no experience travelling while on HRT.  Certainly there are countries where being trans is illegal and dangerous.  You would be wise to research that aspect of your itinerary carefully before travelling.  Be sure to take proper documentation with you.  Passport, of course, but also a list of your prescriptions.  Your medications should be in original pharmacy packaging, with your name and your doctor's name printed on them.  You might want to have your birth certificate with you, too.

Please feel free to stop by the Introductions forum to tell the members about yourself.  Here is some information that we like to share with new members:

You can tell your doctor that you're traveling. I got six months worth of estradiol from my doctor, she wrote a note with the prescription that I was traveling, and would pay out of pocket. It was $36.

I got a 6 month prescription on my first visit to the endo, though I only took out a month's worth.
I'm a 65 year old male who has been thinking about SRS for many years.  I also was a  full cross dresser for a few years.  I wear a bra, pantyhose and nail polish daily because it just feels right.

Started HRT April 17, 2019.

My insurance won't cover longer prescriptions. I guess they don't want to be paying for drugs I won't take if a comet lands on me.

I think there would be lots of potential difficulty doing that. Some countries are dangerous, even to transit the airports.

Even in western Europe you could have difficulty getting HRT quickly. In some countries the doctors can be really backwards and might give you the wrong HRT.

Some countries don't allow you to import more than 1 month of drugs, some are 3 months. I'm on implants now so I'm good for 9 months.

If you're just starting HRT you'll likely end up visibly trans at some point. That's not safe in some places.

I think you'd want to be really well informed before you do this. Like many things, it would help if you had plenty of money.

If you can periodically return to home base, have your endo prescribe a 3-6 month supply, that could work.

Thanks for your input and experiences!

Hi Kathy! I'll head over soon.

I won't be traveling through airports, which hopefully will help!, but agree on doing as much research as possible. I've done quite a bit but wanted to seek wise council from the forum after I've read through posts for a year or so but have never posted. I'll be traveling by boat so customs hopefully shouldn't be an issue like it is in an airport etc. :)

Returning home will be tough but maybe "friendly" countries with a reputable medication background would be an option? It's tough to find that list! I'll be off of insurance most likely as the global plans are quite expensive. :'(
