Changing Gender on U.S. Passport

I'm finally getting around to changing my gender on my US Passport. I am a little concerned that my surgery was outside the US (Brassard). Did anyone have a problem updating their passport using the surgeons letter or did you have to provide a license/DEA number?

If anyone has experience on this, it would be very helpful 🙂.

p.s.  I cant understand all the legal talk in the first pdf. Does anyone understand which form we are supposed to use for gender change? Page 6 says to use Form DS-11 which is In Person, but that is different than what I heard before. I thought we were supposed to use DS-82?

I just brought in 2 forms of ID one was a BC and the other a DL and some postal info for residency and went and applied at a us post office..

I went in person.  The passport office at our Post Office is in a room by itself.  There was no one else there.  It wasn't an issue.  I had my BC (not changed), my name change order, the passport application (new, my old passport expired decades ago and was lost), my top surgery letter, my driver's license (changed) and money.  🙂

If you only have 1 surgery letter, I'd bring a copy.  I got all of my documents back except my letter.

They actually permanently changed the gender marker on my passport while I was pre-op right before surgery.  Anyone ever hear of this happening?  And it's not a temporary passport .  It's valid for ten years.

And to have that changed I had to have a DEA number, but again, I was pre-op at the time.

I have a letter from one of my therapists, that allows me to have a "F" on my passport.  Which should be the ten year one.  I have not yet gotten it,but I shall shortly.

Awesome - thanks for the info Valerie. Did you're letter from Dr. Brassard suffice? I have a notarized letter from my surgeon but he is in Thailand and obviously doesn't have a DEA number. I would love to just take that letter. But i guess i can make an appointment with a local doc if i need another letter.
