American main-stream society has been trained to understand itself to be exceptionalist, and idealist.
Ever since the US came about - after it's own revolution.
The idea was, and still is, that what Europe is doing is way outdated - and the US has it like: "yes we can!" (and if the last nail breaks!)
When the rest of the world gets critical about this really unattainable idealism and tired of hearing how "exceptional" the US is after all – then the jig is up.
How can it be, if we the US are TRYING ever so hard at our ever so well meant idealistic "thing" (never mind it really succeeding) the world doesn't not feel so much more thankful?!
This hole notion of idealist, exptionalist has come one VERY long way in the US. It actually goes back to the founding fathers rejecting the English Crown, and the rest of Europe, - save France after the French revolution. And never mind all the heads that were rolling at that time off the Guillotine. It was THE lead in idealistic, exceptionalist endeavour.
It seems close to impossible to let go of this world-view (even after Vietnam, looking at Afghanistan, looking at Iraq), it would mean or at least seem, having been wrong after all, --- that LOVE, and DEMOCRACY is not the be all and end all, that in deed it is rather a healthy "balance of power".
In deed, too much power will become frightening to others and so they will gang up on you, lest you be in a position to take away their independence!
To be all "loving" and "caring" and at the same time OVERBEARING! is not what makes the worlds go round.
Religious fervour is of course also supporting these over-idealistic "love and care" notions - this must not be overlooked.
My 2 cents, a 1/2 European, of 1/2 US decent, and living in Africa,
