THEM News - JAMES FACTORA
July 12, 2024
Last month, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida permanently blocked the state from enforcing SB 254, which restricted access to gender-affirming care for transgender adults and banned that care for minors wholesale.
This June, a judge issued a permanent injunction against all of the state's restrictions on gender-affirming care, including those enacted through legislation and those passed through the state's medical boards.
In the 105-page document, federal district court judge Robert Hinkle wrote, "The elephant in the room should be noted at the outset. Gender identity is real. The record makes this clear." He also noted that "some legislators plainly acted from old-fashioned discriminatory animus," citing instances of various lawmakers who called trans people "mutants" and "demons," said that trans identity "is just ideological or made up or wokeism," and said that the bill "saves trans people" and "recognizes who they are in the eyes of God."
"As the court found, the state of Florida has not been able to provide a single instance of a Florida transgender adolescent or adult receiving inappropriate treatment or experiencing regret over care they have received in the state."
