The critic Adam Mars-Jones called Murphy "the first black film star white audiences could love without guilt". Murphy stated he was firmly in the tradition of Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor, but he was bolder. Just how much bolder was evident when his new mainstream audience caught up with his stand-up act via records and videos and witnessed his rants against woman and homosexuals.
