NYU Langone Health, a major New York City hospital system and large provider of trans healthcare, will no longer administer gender-affirming medical care to trans minors, due to the "current regulatory environment," according to a statement provided to the New York Times on Tuesday evening.
With Langone announcing the end of its Transgender Youth Health Program, trans minors will now have to go elsewhere to receive life-saving treatments such as puberty blockers and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). While patients can still receive mental health care for gender-related issues at NYU, experts say the dissolution of the program marks an alarming blow against the city's trans youth.
"I'm horrified at the consequences that might result for some of these young people," Brad Hoylman-Sigal, Manhattan Borough President, told the Times. "It's crucial that they find alternative care as soon as possible, and I think it's the responsibility of the hospitals that are ending this treatment to make those arrangements."
The move follows long-standing pressure from the Trump administration, beginning with the president's January 2025 executive order which aimed to prohibit federally-funded hospitals from providing gender-affirming care to trans minors. NYU stopped accepting new patients into the Transgender Youth Health Program and began cancelling gender-affirming care appointments for patients younger than 19 following the executive order, prompting a wave of backlash.
