John Russell (25 June 2026)
Earlier this week, the "21st Century Road to Housing Act" passed with bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress. The bill, which would address the country's housing shortage and affordability crisis, has been hailed as a rare instance of both parties coming together to pass meaningful legislation to help the American people. Dennis Shea, executive vice president for the Center for Housing Policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center, described the bill's passing as "a milestone not just for housing policy, but for what's possible when Congress works together," according to CNN.
The president was set to sign the bill into law on Wednesday. But with less than two hours to go before the scheduled signing, Trump shocked lawmakers, including members of his own party, by abruptly canceling, writing on social media that he would not sign the bill "until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency."
Critics have characterized the bill as an effort to disenfranchise voters and rig future elections in Republicans' favor. According to the Movement Advancement Project, 23% percent of Black Americans and 23% of Hispanic Americans don't have access to a valid driver's license. And as John Gallagher noted in a piece for LGBTQ Nation earlier this year, an estimated 146 million Americans don't have a passport, while many others – particularly transgender people, married women, and same-sex couples – lack a birth certificate that reflects their current name.
