The Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a lawsuit on Monday against the Kansas City, Kansas Public School (KCKPS) District for its policy that does not forcibly out trans students to their parents. The district is one of four investigated by the Education Department (ED) earlier this year.
"Parental rights are paramount in the operation of America's public schools, and Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools does not know children better than their own parents," the DOJ's Assistant Attorney General and head of their Civil Rights Division, Harmeet Dhillon, said in a statement. "The department will not tolerate school districts playing fast and loose with federal law in the service of radical gender ideology."
Back in February 2024, Kansas' Republican Attorney General and major Trump fan, Kris Kobach, began pushing for schools to out trans students to their parents, despite not being able to cite any laws to enforce his desire.
In June 2025, the Defense of Freedom Institute (a right-wing nonprofit which claims to "expand education and work opportunities for all Americans" and "reduce the power of the federal government") filed a complaint about four Kansas school districts. The nonprofit's 35-page letter detailed each district's policies, guidance, and web presences as they related to gender identity or diversity, equity, and inclusion.
All of this, the institute claimed, represented violations of Title IX and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA is a policy that allows parents to view their child's academic records. Some conservatives have claimed that schools keep students' updated names and pronouns out of those files or in secondary files that are not shown to parents.---------------------------------
