The Denver City Council is considering an ordinance to limit the collection and sharing of information on sexual orientation and gender identity by city agencies as a way to protect LGBTQ+ people from state and federal probes.
The ordinance, according to The Denver Gazette, would limit what agencies can share with law enforcement and other governments; require the destruction of certain information after 30 days; require disclosure by agencies of the kind of data they collect within 90 days of the ordinance taking effect; require annual compliance reports from agencies; and ban agencies from targeting people exclusively using data on their gender or sex. It would not prevent internal data sharing between city agencies.
"We don't want anyone thinking they have free rein to share data," said Councilmember Stacie Gilmore, who added that "it is so horrific what folks are going through to target people for who they are."
"It's inhumane," she said while explaining the ordinance during a Budget and Policy Committee meeting on Monday. "And I'm not down for that."
The City Council Health and Safety Committee will hold a hearing on the ordinance on Wednesday. If it passes, it will take effect January 1, 2027.
The proposal comes as the Trump administration continues to seek data on trans people as a way to oppress the community. While the Department of Justice has mostly focused on demanding health information from hospitals, city officials are likely doing what they can to safeguard the information of LGBTQ+ residents should the administration or state government escalate demands.-------------------------------
