U.S. Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE), the first out trans person in Congress, asked her Democratic House colleagues in a September 14 letter to support her bid to become one of the next co-chairs of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee. The committee develops caucus-wide messaging for the House Democratic caucus.
But in order to join the committee, she'll first have to win re-election by defeating her anti-LGBTQ+ Republican opponent, Joseph Arminio.
McBride said she wants the post-midterm Democratic caucus to "hit the ground running with a unified message" in 2027, and acknowledged the "increasingly complex media environment" that the party must navigate.
She also mentioned that she served as the national press secretary and spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) from 2016 through 2020, around the time she was elected to the Delaware State Senate.
"At that time, we were winning fights by earning public support through effective persuasion," McBride wrote. "We didn't shame those who disagreed with us. We welcomed them into a conversation about where we agreed and found common ground to build upon."
McBride said that, since joining this Democratic House caucus, she has done similar work "to facilitate conversations on issues where we haven't all agreed, and where members in very different districts needed substantively different messages to effectively communicate with their constituents."-------------------------------
